LPG as a cooking fuel in India was launched by "Burmah Oil Company" under the brand name “Burshane” in the year 1955. The Burmah
Shell Company was taken over by the Government of India to form "Bharat Refineries Limited" on 24th of January 1976. The group was named to its present name, i.e. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on 1st of August 1977. The group has four major refineries and bottling plants in different parts of India. Those are named as Numaligarh Refinery in Assam having a capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per year, Kochi Refineries in Kerala having a capacity of 9.5 million metric tonnes per year, Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh with a capacity of 6 million metric tonnes per year and Mumbai Refinery in Maharashtra having a capacity of 12 million metric tonnes per year.
