Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS is permanently affiliated to the Bangalore University and has the recognition of Government of Karnataka and The Bar Council of India, New Delhi.
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS was inaugurated on 2nd August, 1993 by Sri B V Acharya, the then Advocate General, Government of Karnataka. Dr. V.B. Coutinho, the then Dean and Principal of University Law College, Bangalore presided over the function.
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS was started in a very humble manner comprising of a modest library, with a few students. Little did the college realize that the college would scale such heights.Sri G.V. Subba Rao assumed office as the First Principal of the college. Subsequently, Prof. Anand Rao of the Department of English served as the acting Principal for a short term. On 10th July, 1996, Prof. S.S. Alur was appointed as Principal. His arrival as Principle galvanized the growth and development of the college. His commendable contribution to
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS in terms of his insight, treasure trove of knowledge, guidance and uncanny expertise has brought this institution to where it is today. Prof. Alur was the backbone and pillar strength to this esteemed institution..
As an amalgamation of students from every nook and corner of our country, the institution continues to produce lawyers of the highest standards. This fact has been acknowledged by several research organizations including India Today (need we say more) which has ranked the college as the seventh best among the top ten law colleges in India. The college has been ranked the seventh best Law College for three years in a row by India Today for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively.
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS imparts legal education for 5 year LL.B Degree Course. Students who have secured 45% marks in PUC or 10 + 02 examination are eligible for admission to the First Semester. As per the Bangalore University Academic Calendar of Events, for the next academic year 2008-09, our college reopens on 18-06-2008. Fresh Admissions for the First Semester Class (5 Year LL.B Integrated Course) will Commence from 18-06-2008 or Announcement of II PUC results of March 2008 Examinations, by the Karnataka P.U. Board, whichever is earlier.
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS library houses different sections like text book section, journal section and magazines. Infact, the college provides AIR(SC) from 1950 onwards. The library has a student and Faculty friendly circulation and reference system. The internet facility is available in the library to help the students in Projects, Moot courts and other academic works. BILS is a member of NLSIU Library to facilitate wider reference to the students.
Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies-BILS students' keen involvement in this sphere echoes the above purpose. BILS students have been visiting villages every year in and around Bangalore to provide Legal aid to the needy. This has received much acknowledgement from the Karnataka Legal Aid Services Authority. BILS has a active Legal aid Cell which conducts Legal Literacy Programmes to students at the undergraduate level.
