Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore, had its origin as a Hospital exclusively for women and Children established in 1893 by the Church of England Zenana Mission, and was called the Zenana Mission Hospital. With the inauguration of the Church of South India in the year 1947, it was renamed Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore. It was only in the year 1965 that it developed into a General Hospital to cater to both men and women. Over the years it has evolved into a General and Multispeciality Hospital. True to the original commitment as a service Institution for Health Care, Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore continues to function on a non-profit making basis.


The origin of the Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore can be traced back to the work of the Church of England Zenana Mission. The Missionaries started work among the local Muslim women and children. The need to cater to the health needs of these women by only lady medical personnel was very necessary as these women were not allowed to be treated by male medical personnel. When the demand for medical help grew, the missionaries thought of deputing a lady doctor to cater to their needs. Before sending a full time doctor the local missionary Miss. A. M. S. Smith was asked to procure a suitable site. The present site was acquired in the year 1893. The Bishop of Madras, under whose territorial jurisdiction the work of the Zenana Mission in Bangalore came under, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a Hospital on 30th October 1893 and christened the hospital as Gosha Hospital.


The building of the Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore was completed and declared open on 31st October 1895 by the then Bishop of Madras. Initially the hospital was established specifically to serve the Muslim women and children of the surrounding area. Dr. Miss. Lillington was the first medical officer from the Church of England Zenana Mission. It was only in the year 1965 that the Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore was thrown open to cater to the medical needs of men and thus became a General Hospital. The present building consisting of 200 beds and well-equipped modern amenities was inaugurated in the year 1978.


The Courses provided by Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore are Diplomas in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical X-Ray Technology, Medical Records Technology, which are each of 2 years' duration after PUC/+2 with Science subjects or Certificate Course of 3 years' duration after SSLC. Details are given later with each course. Nursing Courses established in 1950, this higher grade school of nursing provides basic nursing education to develop young women into well integrated personalities who can carry out responsibilities of nursing in the spirit of Christ, in the hospital and community at large. Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore objective is to provide a high standard of nursing practise and education in keeping with our Christian principles. We expect the student to have an overall development during training, by which they will be able to grow with every new experience in and outside the profession.


Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore is located at No.2, Hazrath Kambal Posh Road, formerly called the Broadway Road. At one end of this road is the famed Russel Market. The other end of the road joins the Queen's Road at its junction with the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road (See Google Earth Map). The important landmarks located near the Hospital are the Cantonment Railway Station and the Veterinary Hospital.


The management of the Church of South India Hospital - CSI Hospital Bangalore consists of The Honorary Director, The Associate Medical Superintendent, The Deputy Medical Superintendent and the Nursing Director under the supervision of the Board of Management, chaired by the Bishop of Karnataka Central Diocese, the Rt. Rev. S. Vasanth Kumar.
