Government Polytechnic - Lucknow was setup in 1892 for imparting training initially to Railway employees and was then called INDISTRIAL SCHOOL. It was located in Charbaugh area near Lucknow Junction Railway station. Later Government Polytechnic - Lucknow was renamed, between 1911-1960, as Government Technical Institute (G.T.I.). During this period several courses of certificate and Diploma level were started, many of them were discontinued. In the year 1961, All India Council of Technical Education brought about uniform pattern and consequently this Institute was renamed as Government Polytechnic - Lucknow, and shifted to the present location. It is situated on Faizabad Road, near Gomti Nagar at a distance of 10 km. from Lucknow Jn. Railway station. The present campus measured 46 Acres of land.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has 95428.15 square meters of constructed floor area for 13 class rooms, 08 drawing halls, 16 laboratories,1 mechanical workshop, library, administrative building and building and building for student amenities. Government Polytechnic - Lucknow is running 10 diploma courses at present in which two courses have been started in session 2001-02, the present available equipment in the institute are sufficient to impart training for diploma courses.College provides Diploma program to the college students.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow is located at Faizabad road, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has a rich library and well equipped learning resource center. There are 13211 text books, 8000 reference books, 755 general books in library. 86 educational video cassettes, 105 transparencies and 02 learning software. Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has a 2 computer center in which 30 Pentium system. More than 60% course is hand on experience. 40% course is concerned with theoretical and analytical methods. Transparencies, video films, slides, models are used by teachers to make clear conception of complicated engineering process and theories.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has three hostels having 04 seated rooms accommodation for 410 students with wooden cot, study table and chair and individual cupboard. There is 01 Girl’s hostel having 60 seats capacity. Mess and common room facility is available in the hostel. Cycle & Scooter Stand, Co-operative Store are available in the institute.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has one bus, one mini bus to take care of educational tours and industrial visits of students. A jeep is attached to Training & Placement Officer to keep interaction with industries for the placement of students. Government Polytechnic - Lucknow is fully equipped with latest Machinery & Equipments to train the students to face the challenge of Modern Industries and conduct all the experiments and practical exercises as per the curriculum of the courses being run at this institute.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has also the scheme of N.S.S (National Service Scheme). Various activities are carried out by the volunteers of this scheme, which include blood donation camps, tree plantation etc. Latest achievement of our Polytechnic is the first position in Inter – Polytechnic Table Tennis tournament held at G.P Sonepat in Sep 2006. And second position in Inter – Polytechnic Volley ball (shooting) held at G.P Nilokheri in Sep 2006.
Government Polytechnic - Lucknow has been provided with the different workshops for the training of the students that have been equipped with a wide range of modern, automatic and high-tech machines being used in the industry for the production of various products as per the market requirement. The main shops available in the institution are: Welding Shop, Carpentry shop, Sheet metal shop, Painting shop, Foundry shop, Machine shop and Smithy shop.
