With an aim to undertake training, research and consultancy activities in small and micro enterprises focusing on entrepreneurship development, The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati was established in the year 1993 in Guwahati by the erstwhile Ministry of Industry (now the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), Government of India as an autonomous national institute. The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati began operating from April 1994 with the North East Council (NEC), Governments of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and SIDBI as its other stakeholders.

The activities of the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati include identification of training needs, designing and organizing programmers both for development functionaries and entrepreneurs; evolving effective training strategies and methodologies for different target groups and locations; organize seminars, workshops and conferences for providing fora for interaction and exchange of views by various agencies and entrepreneurs; undertaking research on entrepreneurship development, documenting and disseminating information needed for policy formulation and implementation on self-employment and entrepreneurship.
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati acts as a catalyst for entrepreneurship development by creating an environment for entrepreneurship in the support system, developing new entrepreneurship, helping in the growth of existing entrepreneurs and propagation of entrepreneurial education. A state of the art Information Technology Centre has been set up with the help of CMC Ltd, Kolkata. The Centre is going to be the nerve-centre for storage, analysis and retrieval of every kind of information related to the industrial and entrepreneurial arena of India in general and the North-East in particular.
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati building has been networked with state of the art local area network (LAN).The Institute has a library and a Documentation Centre. Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati library is well stocked with latest books, publications, magazines and journals related to small industry and entrepreneurship. It has about 15000 books and bound volumes. The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati subscribes to more than 125 Indian and foreign journals and periodicals that are valuable source of information for entrepreneurs, extensions agents and professionals and in the field of entrepreneurship and small industry. It provides membership on nominal charge.
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati has a documentation centre. It collects, stores and disseminates information useful for small industry promotion and entrepreneurship. It brings out a weekly Current Awareness Service. Other services available are Newspaper Clippings, Topical Bibliography, SDI services etc. The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship – IIE Guwahati has a sprawling hostel with 42 single rooms with attached bathrooms. Hostel rooms are fully furnished.There are also air-conditioned rooms.There are facilities for Indoor games like Chess, Carrom, Table Tennis etc. The Hostel also has the facility of a Television Room with cable connection.
