Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad was established in January1987. This Regional Centre covers the Telangana Districts (except Khammam District) and Rayalseema District (except Chittoor District) of Andhra Pradesh. This Regional Centre was formally inaugurated on 2nd February 1987 by Late Professor G Ram Reddy, founder Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU. Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad had 5 Study Centres in 1987 and admitted 546 students into two programmes viz., Diploma in Distance Education and Diploma in Management Programmes. Over the years it has established 50 Study Centres / Programme Study Centres offering more than 300 programmes launched by the University. Out of 50 Study Centres established in the State, 10 are regular Study Centres and 40 are Programme Study Centres.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad has emerged as one of the largest IGNOU Regional Centre with cumulative enrolment crossing 2.0 lakh figure. At the time of its inception in the year 1987 Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad catered to educational needs of the entire state of Andhra Pradesh. As the enrolment for various programmes increased the Jurisdiction of the Regional Centre has been divided into two Regions in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Thus from July 2008 onwards the Jurisdiction of Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad caters to the following districts of Andhra Pradesh : Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nalgonda, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Mahaboob Nagar, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur (All districts of Telangana except Khammam and all districts of Rayalseema except Chittoor, Nellore).

University provides Diploma, Bachelor Degree, Master Degree and Doctoral program to the college students.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad is located at Kavuri Hills, Phase-II, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.University library has a collection of 2566 books, bound volumes of all IGNOU study materials, 324 Video cassettes and 2028 CD ROMs. The library is intended to serve as reference library for the IGNOU students. It provides for reference copies of previous year question papers, and current assignments.
<Indira Gandhi National Open University - IGNOU Hyderabad has two Gyan Vani stations exclusively for educational programmes. Hyderabad Gyan Vani station broadcasts IGNOU programmes daily between 06.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. at 105.6 MHz. Similarly the Visakhapatnam Gyan Vani Station broadcasts its programmes from 06.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. daily with the repeat of the same programmes daily in the morning between 06.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m.
