Publications of International Rice Research Institute – IRRI Delhi despite the past achievements, rice productivity growth will remain essential in the future for several important reasons. Rice yield growth has slowed considerably in recent years and has failed to keep up with population growth, leading to shortages and higher prices that have adversely affected the poor. This was demonstrated by the food crisis and the rice price spike experienced in 2008. Clearly, food security remains somewhat tenuous despite the rapid economic growth experienced in many parts of the world.
International Rice Research Institute – IRRI Delhi for the first time since the crisis in late 2007, new uncertainties plague the global rice market. A record global rice crop in 2008 kept the situation under wrap, with rice prices dropping by as much as 60% after peaking in May 2008. Favorable growing conditions in the major rice-producing countries definitely helped the situation, as 10 million tons of rice was added to the global rice inventory at a time when stocks reached a level not seen in the last 30 years. Government interventions in the form of a higher minimum procurement price, along with higher input subsidies, also helped production reach a record.
Training programme at International Rice Research Institute – IRRI Delhi since 1964, over 15,000 scientists have been trained to conduct rice research. IRRI scholars have become ministers, secretaries, and leaders within the national research and extension systems (NARES). Many have also become leading scientists all over Asia. By helping to build human capacity, IRRI's training has enhanced national systems and ultimately has improved the quality of life in agricultural nations.
