Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and provides technical training and applied education designed to meet the demands of Alberta's industries. In 1959, the Alberta provincial government decided to build an Edmonton facility to supplement apprenticeship and vocational training, which was at the time handled by the Provincial Institute of Technology (PITA) in Calgary.
The new institution would be named Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton and PITA would be renamed the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Construction of the new facility began in January 1962. The first class was enrolled in October, a group of 29 Communication Electrician apprentices. NAIT officially opened on May 27, 1963, with a ceremony led by Premier Manning. The first graduation ceremony happened in 1965, with a class of 326 graduates. In 1982, the government transferred control to the new Board of Governors, chaired by Allan McCagherty.
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton mascot is the Ook. This is a shortened version of the Inuktitut word for the Snowy Owl, Ookpik. NAIT was presented this mascot in 1964 by the federal Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources, now Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. Most of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton sports teams are now called the Ooks as well. The institute confers certificates, diplomas, applied degrees and degrees. NAIT's new four year baccalaureate degrees (Bachelor of Technology in Technology Management and Bachelor of Applied Business Administration) were launched in 2007.
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton Students' Association comprises all NAIT students. It is led by a four-person elected Executive, and governed by an eighteen-person elected Senate (two from each school). NAITSA is responsible for running The Nest (campus bar), The Nugget (campus newspaper), campus events, a student health and dental plan, and various other services aimed at enhancing student life. Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton official campus radio station, Nr92, can be heard at the school and online. It is fully staffed by students in the Radio and Television program, and offers information to students about events and school news. Techlife is the institute's official magazine focusing on people, technology and innovation. It is published twice yearly in April and October with electronic web extras sent out monthly.
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton Computer Commons is a self-serve computer lab available for all NAIT students and staff who wish to drop in to work on computers, do some laser printing or photocopy. The Commons is also a wireless access point. Northern Alberta Institute of Technology - NAIT Edmonton Computer Commons will no longer have a representative from ISD Technical Support available from 2pm - 4pm Mondays to Saturdays until further notice. If you require technical support, please call the SSCC at 780-471-6248. The NAITSA Computer Commons is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including statutory holidays. The lab does close for the annual December break.
