Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari was ushered into existence in July 1965 by the Vivekananda Educational Society, Agasteeswarm as a living memorial to Swami Vivekananda to commemorate the Birth Centenary of the great sage of the east. Nestling amidst sylvan sorroundings, the campus lies in close proximity to the imposing Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari.
The principal objective of Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari Society is to hold the students belonging to different faiths to grasp the significance of our indigenous culture and ancient heritage through a study of the teachings of Vivekananda there by promoting the cause of national integration by focusing attention on the University of appeal of the Swamiji’s teachings. The ultimate aim is to gradually develop the College in to a residential unitary University bearing the great Swamiji’s name which will in course of time, turn out countless Vivekananda who will work ceaselessly for international understanding and universal peace.
The history of the beginning of Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari is a saga of daring pluck and self confidence displayed by the sponsors, notably its chief architect and promoter, Thiru. S.D. PANDIANADAR, B.A., a retired senior officer of the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin Government. It was to Thiru Pandianadar that the idea of starting Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari in the name of the great patriot saint of India first occurred and when he mooted it among his friends and relations, they hailed it enthusiastically. He then issued appeals to his friends for donation of lands himself offering 1.5 acres of his valuable land, for the purpose. Thiru. G.A. Marthandan, honored as a patron member of the society came forward to help in a grand way by donating 5.5 acres in that area. Others followed suit and the sponsors were finally able to get a compact area of 30 acres of land for starting the College. The area has now increased to 60 acres. The college provides Bachelor Degree and Master Degree to the college students.
Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari is located at Agastheeswaram, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. A beautiful Library is attached to Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari with more than 1000 books on various subjects, Nursing journals, Literary Books, News Papers and magazines. A well furnished auditorium with a capacity to accommodate 1000 students at a time. Vivekananda Educational Society institutions have fully equipped laboratories manned by experienced enthusiastic staffs that are available for the student for their practical classes.
The Hostel is also situated in Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari premises, which can accommodate 900 students in well furnished rooms. Separate hostels for boys and girls. The Mess is run under the active super vision of the student resprentatives as well as warden and the management combindly. A clean, Neat and hygienic dining hall is also attached to the kitchen.
Cultural activities are given all encouragement in Vivekananda College of Arts and Science - Kanyakumari and a group of faculty members guide, help and conduct activities such as Music , Dance and Dramatics, Inter departmental literary program is conducted every year. Student’s activity participates in various Inter -collegiate cultural events. Activities of this kind provide an opportunity to the student in molding their personality. The institution has a unit of youth Red Cross society affiliated to Indian Red Cross Society and the membership is open to all students. The Activities are taken care of by a member of the staff.
