West Bengal State University - Kolkata is a newly established university situated in Barasat, West Bengal, India. The Vice Chancellor of West Bengal State University is eminent educationist Prof. Asok Ranjan Thakur.The Government of West Bengal has through an Act of the Legislative Assembly has passed West Bengal Act XXVIII of 2007 implementing a long standing public demand in creating the University named "West Bengal State University - Kolkata (Barasat,North 24 Paragans)" This became functional from the academic session 2008-09. On 26 May 2008 there are 57 colleges formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta have been, through a government notification (No.300-Edn(U)/ IU-38/08), transferred to this new university.
The West Bengal State University - Kolkata campus of the university is now being constructed at Berunanpukuria and the university operates from there. All the thirty postgraduate course classes have already started there.The girls' hostel is in the process of being built but would not be ready before November 2010.
Mision of the West Bengal State University - Kolkata is to Create a flow of quality human resource capable of meeting scientific , technological and social challenges of today and tomorrow, To introduce integrated courses up to Ph D level, To widen access to Higher Education through introduction of new courses in Professional studies., To encourage dissemination of knowledge with a view to ensuring better job oppurtunities for the students, To provide vocational training and programmes to Madhyamik passed students of West Bengal State University - Kolkata.
To inform the public how the expert committee for selection was constituted in this West Bengal State University - Kolkata. In every subject, name of one expert came from the Chancellor's office – known as Chancellor's nominee. In every subject one to three names were further given by the Council of the West Bengal State University - Kolkata. This constituted the selection committee. Vice-chancellor was the ex-officio Chairman of all the selection committees.
The library which is the heart of the University has been housed in center of the West Bengal State University - Kolkata building. It has a worthy collection of more than 16,898 books. West Bengal State University - Kolkata library is partially computerized. We have subscribed More than 30 periodicals / journals (kannada, english, hindi) and 6 newspapers. Book bank faculty is provided to the economically backward and meritorious students. The library is kept open on all working days from 8a.m. to 3 p.m. We have Home Issue Section and Reference Section.
