The BDS course offered by Amrita School of Dentistry - ASD Kochi commenced in September 2003 and was inaugurated by Smt. Sushama Swaraj, the then Minister for Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. It is housed in a self-contained four-storey building, having a built-up area of 154,000 sq. ft., and is one of the biggest dental colleges in Asia. The building includes pre-clinical dental laboratories, lecture halls, a conference centre, faculty offices, administrative offices, clinical treatment areas, small group discussion areas, a faculty practice, and a library. Sufficient area has been earmarked for future expansion and also to commence post-graduate programmes as well as to carry out research activities.AIMS Sixty (60) students are admitted to the BDS course in the Amrita School of Dentistry - ASD Kochi every year. The duration of the course is 5 years with a 6 months optional rotating internship. The curriculum is in accordance with the Dental Council of India regulations.
An integrated approach combining extensive clinical practice with rigorous course work promotes a better understanding of dentistry and its relationship to overall health. High quality training facilities are available in Craniofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery apart from regular classes in all specialities in dentistry such as Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Periodontics & Implantology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology & Microbiology, and Community Dentistry. The students of Amrita School of Dentistry - ASD Kochi are exposed to maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation carried out in the Department of Prosthodontics. A great deal of emphasis is placed on community-oriented dental outreach programmes. ASD extends the knowledge of oral health by encouraging and assisting faculty in the pursuit of innovative research. The School also stimulates and encourages the qualities of ethics, human values, and character that mark the true oral health professional.

By serving this varied segment of the population, our students come to understand the prevalence of certain diseases and oral health problems, comprehend the patterns of disease, and learn from the outcomes of selected therapies.The B. D. S. Degree is the culmination of a four-year program that emphasizes patient-centered care. Students develop clinical skills under close supervision of faculty. During the first two years, students study biochemistry, human gross anatomy, general and oral histology, general and oral microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, and oral medicine and pathology. An integrated curriculum reinforces knowledge and prepares students to apply it in actual patient care situations beginning in their third year of study. Third and fourth year students are assigned to functional group practices with a family of patients. A faculty group practice director monitors the progress and ensures the competency of every student.
