In Department of Architecture and Planning – Roorkee, Architecture Course was started at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in the year 1956-57. In the year 1961, the Department was housed in its own independent building and premises. The B.Arch. course was recognized by the Indian Institute of Architects in December 1961. The Department has the singular distinction of being the first in INDIA in instituting a Masters degree course in Architecture (M. Arch.) in the year 1969-70. This was eventually raised to an independent course of Masters Degree in Urban and Rural Planning (MURP) in the year 1973-74. The Institute takes very special care in selecting students for admission to various academic programmes with the objective of providing technical education only to the best ones.
Department of Architecture and Planning – Roorkee, established in 1956, imparts high quality education in the professional fields of Architecture and Planning. Master's program in architecture was started in the late sixties, followed by Master's degree in Urban and Rural Planning. Special emphasis is now being laid on integrating practical experience of building construction with the core curriculum. Emphasis is also being laid on research and about a dozen students are pursuing their Ph.D. programs. Besides this, 23 research papers were published in conferences and journals.
Department of Architecture and Planning – Roorkee also provides consultancy services to various government and non-government agencies, eight consultancy projects were running in 2004-05. The department has been selected as one of the seven National Resource Institutes under the NPCBAERM to train architects in Earthquake Resistant Design and Construction and a sum of Rs. 30.96 lacs has been allocated to the department for this purpose. Two training courses were held in 2004-05.
Department of Architecture and Planning – Roorkee library is a beautiful and modern library well updated books, journals & multimedia learning aids, provides the student and opportunities to keep themselves well versed with related information. A library well stocked with all the necessary volumes is available at the student's disposal. It is the synthesis of theories with working knowledge, together avenues to exploit all the available resources; we can mould our students into thorough professionals, who would become the leaders of their profession.

In order to cater to all the students from different parts of India and aboard, South India, North Indian and Chinese dishes are offered.
