Model Engineering College - MEC Kochi was established in 1989 by the IHRD to provide quality engineering education in the industrial centre of Kerala. It was established as a self-financing college with a fair degree of autonomy. Model Engineering College - MEC Kochi started functioning in August 1989 in the premises of High School, Edapally with three degree courses offered in Biomedical , Computer and Electronics Engineering.

Model Engineering College - MEC Kochi is the first self-financing college to be established by the Government of Kerala under the aegis of the Institute of Human Resource Development for Electronics, IHRDE (now IHRD) and the first to be affiliated to CUSAT (Cochin University of Science And Technology). Model Engineering College - MEC Kochi Library has acquired a good collection of books and journals in the area of Electronics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering and related subjects like Science, Mathematics and Management. Library has approximately 16000 volumes of books and 60 journals. Books are classified according to Dewey Decimal classification scheme and are catalogued according to Anglo American Cataloguing rules II , with local variation. library provides information services such as current awareness service, selective dissemination of information service, reference service, bibliographic service etc. An amount of Rs 50 lakhs has been sanctioned for modernisation of the library under TEQIP Project.
