Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai was established in 1964 by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), a professionally managed trust with a large number of prestigious academic institutions, under its umbrella. SVKM is the brain child of leading industrialists and socially conscious philanthropists who wanted to contribute to the local area by founding educational institutions .The Mandal has an extensive local base with a large primary membership.
The Status of Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai as a minority institution for the Gujarati Linguistic Community is a significant achievement in providing access to students from the Gujarati Speaking Community, to the most coveted college in the Commerce and Business Management Streams. Although the Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai started by focusing on education to make students self-reliant and to prepare them for careers in the commerce field, it gradually extended the scope of its activities to include the molding of the overall personality of the students. The Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai has earned laurels in the field of academics, as well as in extra and co-curricular activities. Every year, about half the number of students in the merit list of HSC Board, are from this college. The College result is 99.83% against the board passing percentage of 71.78%. 77% of the students have passed with Distinction and 98% of the students have secured at least First Class. At the HSC Vocational Examinations the college results have been 100% or last few years. For the Examination conducted in March 2010, the results are 100% again. At the TYBCOM examinations, there are 6 rankers amongst the top 10 at University of Mumbai. 94% of the students have secured at least a first class. Students of the BMS Section have also brought laurels to the college and have done us proud with their excellent performance.
Since the inception of the course, Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai has always bagged the top ranks. Amongst the first ten rankers at the BMS Examinations conducted in March 2010, 7 students were from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai. 97% of the students have secured at least First Class. 88% of the students have passed in Distinction. Students from NM perform well not only at the college level, but also in post-graduation examinations in India and abroad, also at the corporate level. N M has a long list of distinguished alumni to prove this.
Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai provides excellent infrastructure to facilitate the education process, and enhance the learning ability of the students. It aims at developing the intellectual capabilities of the students and enhances their understanding of the relationship between education and the real world. The recently renovated building includes a modern air-conditioned office block, modern well equipped air-conditioned classrooms, well planned corridors and elevators.
The Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai uses state-of-art technology in its teaching process by making use of audio systems, Overhead Projects, LCD projectors, DVD players and television sets. A well-equipped Resource Generation Room is set-up for the faculty to prepare teaching material and carry out research in their subject. The well equipped computer laboratories with 80 computers enhance the learning process and enable the proper conduct of the University prescribed courses. Branded Personal Computers are installed in three Computer Labs, all networked to facilitate teaching in small batches, with adequate faculty attention.
All the computers in the Lab and the Office have a dedicated lease line for Internet connectivity, which can be used by students and staff. The students’ comfort is taken care of by providing separate common rooms for girls and boys, and other utilities. The talent of the students is given a supportive platform through the auditoriums and conference rooms of the SVKM. The SVKM’s Juhu Jagruti Hall, Bhaidas Sabhagriha, Jashoda Rang Mandir and Santokba Hall are available to the college for its events.
The Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai has a very spacious and state-of-art library with a seating capacity of around 300 students. The library operates from 7.45 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and during examinations the time is extended up to 8.00 p.m. The library has a collection of around 45,000 books, subscription to 70 magazines and journals and has a facility of e-library with excess to more than 4000 journals on various topics, which are used by a good number of students, faculty members, ex-students, etc. Besides this the library has a wide collection of books relating to various topics. The Librarian and her team of dedicated and efficient staff manage the functioning of the library.
The Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics - Mumbai has ensured that the staff and students have access to health facilities regularly. A Health-cum-Counselling Centre has been operational for several years. A qualified medical practitioner visits the college daily. Students and staff consult the doctor. In times of emergency, help from the doctors in the vicinity is taken. Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal has a common men’s hostel for all its institutions at a distance of a half-kilometre from the college and hostel for girls opposite Utpal Sanghvi School, close to the college.
