SRM University - Chennai was established in the year 1968. SRM University - Chennai is headed by the Chancellor Mr. T. R. Pachamuthu, supported by Pro-Chancellors Mr. P. Ravi, Dr. R. Shivakumar and The Vice-Chancellor Mr. P. Sathyanarayanan. The Directors of faculties, admission, corporate affairs, student affairs, alumni and various campuses report directly to the Vice Chancellor. The planning, finance and legal work closely with Vice Chancellor reporting to the Board of Management. The four faculties - Engineering & Technology, Management, Medicine & Health Sciences, and Science & Humanities - are headed by Directors. Directors head the key functional areas including Research, Admission, Company Affairs and Student Affairs. The various schools are headed by the Deans and the departments by HODs.

Learning is an enjoyable experience here, with inspiring libraries and stimulating discussion rooms, large playgrounds and state-of-the-art labs. A serene and charming enclave, the SRM Dental College is located here. It consists of 5 academic blocks spread over 25 acres, with all the necessary facilities and infrastructure for medical and health science students.
At SRM University - Chennai, the student accommodation is a "home away from home". They instill self-confidence and a spirit of camaraderie among the students, and contribute to professional fraternity. There are separate hostels for men and women on the campus, with all the necessary facilities. The Hostel facilities at SRM University - Chennai Campus can accommodate about 1250 students (1000 girls & 250 boys). All campus accommodation has resident tutors and a warden who are responsible for the welfare of resident students and for ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
SRM University - Chennai has an excellent library for the benefit of students, faculties and researchers. As one of the best established libraries according to International Standards, SRM University - Chennai Library has a large collection of books covering various branches of Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Sciences and Science and Humanities and its related fields. The library is located in the 15-Storey University Administrative Block, and is spread over Ground + 3 floors of 1.50 Lakh sq ft areas.
A fully air-conditioned and state-of-the-art computer centre with more than 200 terminals functions at SRM University - Chennai campus. Students are encouraged to make full use of the facility to train themselves in modern computer applications and software development - and for academic learning. Students can also acquire practical experience in hardware technology as quite a number of computers are assembled internally at the college workshop.
Students of SRM University - Chennai have access to medical facilities at various places, apart from a 24-hour dispensary which has been set up on campus with a doctor on call. The SRM Hospital at West Mambalam has facilities for several diagnostic procedures such as ECG, X-Ray and laboratory investigation. A mini supermarket functions within the campus, to supply necessities. The canteen also offers a range of snacks and beverages. Nationalized banks run extension counters at the Kattankulathur and Ramapuram premises, making it convenient for students and staff to transact business at the campus itself.
SRM University - Chennai has tie-ups with various organizations, so students of various disciplines can visit their plants to get a direct insight into the multi-functional processes at these organizations. In-plant training is also organized whenever necessary. SRM University - Chennai runs a fleet of buses for transporting students to and from the city and to other areas. SRM University - Chennai won the South-West Inter University Chess Tournament held at MGR College, Hosur from 29th September to 4th October 2009. The defending champions stamped their authority over the event as they successfully defended the title by scoring 27 points out of possible 36. SRM University - Chennai Athlete secured 1st Place in 100mts, 200mts, 400mts 100 hurdles in TIES 2009 held at Jayam Engineering College, Darmapuri. SRM Arts College beat Manipal University at the International Sports Festival Rivera 2010 organized by VIT University, Vellore. SRM University - Chennai beats Jain University and secures the 1st place in the All India Inter College Tournament 2010 organized by Jain University, Bangalore.
