The University of Gour Banga-Malda has been established by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly vide West Bengal Act XXVI of 2007. University of Gour Banga Campus is situated at Malda which is a historic town of undivided Bengal, previously known as “GOUR”.
GOUR was a Buddhist dynasty named as “Pundrabardhan State” during the dynasty of Vikramaditya in 602 AD. After King Sasanka, people of gour made Gopalder as their King who bought his capital at “GOUR” on the bank of river Kalindri from “Karnasubarna”. “Rampal”, the last king of this family died in 1120 AD. Then came “Sen dynasty” in 12th century and earned fame during “Ballal Sen” and “Lakkhan Sen”. In the year 1202 AD, “Bakhtiar Khilji” invaded and owned GOUR from “Lakkhan Sen” and the Muslim dynasty started in Bengal defeating Hindus. In 1537 AD, “Shershah Suri” invaded GOUR and destroyed Hindu sculptures and structures.
University of Gour Banga-Malda takes care of higher education in the three districts of North Bengal namely, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur covering a huge area as depicted below .The shaded a represents territorial jurisdiction of the University of Gour Banga-Malda within the State of West Bengal. There is an international border with Bangladesh on the eastern side and on the western side the territorial area shares border with the Indian state of Bihar. On the northern and southern sides, the area borders the districts of Darjeeling and Murshidabad respectively.

All the general degree colleges, law colleges and teachers training colleges in the district of Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur have been brought under affiliation of the University of Gour Banga-Malda vide Govt. Order No. 299-Edn (U)/EH/IU-37/08 dated 26-05-2008.Currently there are 34 affiliated colleges out of which 20 general degree colleges provide B.A. /B.Sc. /B.Com. /B.C.A. /B.B.A. / B.H.M. courses/12 colleges provide B.Ed. course/one College offers B.P.Ed. University of Gour Banga-Malda Campus offers M.A. in English/Bengali/Arabic/Sanskrit/History/Education and M.Sc. in Mathematics from December 15, 2008 (2008-09 sessions). The Govt. of West Bengal has transferred a plot of land measuring about 26 acres within the English Bazar Municipality area for setting up the campus of the University of Gour Banga-Malda. Construction of the Boundary Wall has been taken up by the P.W.D., Malda Division. The Master Plan of the University of Gour Banga-Malda Campus has been designed. Plan & Estimates for construction of buildings have been prepared, vetted by the competent authority, cleared by the State Planning Board and submitted to the State Govt. for approval. M/S Makintosh Burn Ltd., an Undertaking of the Governement of West Bengal has been appointed as the construction agency to execute all construction works in the upcoming University of Gour Banga-Malda Campus.
