University of Michigan – UM Dearborn was founded in 1959 with a gift of 196 acres (0.79 km2) and $6.5 million dollars from Ford Motor Company. Built as an elite automotive engineering and business management school, University of Michigan – UM Dearborn started near the Rouge River on what is known as Fair Lane. As the university quickly grew to respond to the metropolitan region's needs, it established fully fledged colleges in the arts, business, engineering, and education.
University of Michigan – UM Dearborn, located in Dearborn, Michigan, USA, is a coeducational, masters-level, public university which is part of the University of Michigan system.During the late 1990s and 2000s, the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn approved the purchase of buildings north of Fair Lane and the construction and overhaul of several university buildings including the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters building, the University Center, the Science Learning and Research Center, and finally the Institute for Advanced Vehicular Studies. The purchased buildings north of Fair Lane are now home to the College of Business and School of Education, giving space for expansion of the other two colleges.
In November 2008, the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn board of regents approved the establishment of Ph.D programs in information systems engineering and automotive systems engineering in the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn College of Engineering and Computer Science beginning in Fall 2009. In February 2009, the regents approved an Ed.D. program at the UM-Dearborn School of Education, designed to provide the citizens of southeastern Michigan with a program that is well-matched to the economic, social and political challenges that face our region.
The campus of the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn is divided into several sections: The Henry Ford Estate, known as Fair Lane, The Fairlane Center, Main Campus, and recently has expanded the Early Childhood Education Center just south of campus. In addition, the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn boasts over 70 acres (283,000 m²) of nature preserve and a bird observatory,the Rouge River Bird Observatory, which has operated on campus since its founding in 1992.
University of Michigan – UM Dearborn is one of two regional campuses of the University of Michigan. The main campus in Ann Arbor, an internationally recognized and celebrated center for education and research, is located just 35 miles west of the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn campus; the other regional campus is in Flint. While governed by a single publicly elected Board of Regents, each campus has a unique mission, suite of academic programs, and identity as one of the 15 public universities of the State of Michigan. Each receives a separate appropriation in the state budget.
Students enrolled at the regional campuses have full access to the extensive library systems, galleries, and sporting events of the main campus, and graduates are members of the largest alumni organization of its kind in the world, the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn Alumni Association. Faculty and students collaborate across all three campuses in research and scholarly activity, and degrees for all three campuses are conferred by the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan – UM Dearborn.
University of Michigan – UM Dearborn campus newspaper is The Michigan Journal and is available online at themichiganjournal.com. It is the largest weekly student publication in the metro Detroit area. University of Michigan–Dearborn also has a literary and fine arts journal, Lyceum, published biannually. The student-run journal publishes art and writing submitted by students and alumni. Lyceum also sponsors and hosts several campus events throughout the year, such as guest lecturers and art and writing competitions.
University of Michigan – UM Dearborn Athletic teams are known as the Wolves, the colors are Maize and Blue. The university participates in a number of intercollegiate athletics as part of the NAIA in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Varsity Sports include men's and women's basketball, softball, volleyball. The school also fields an ice Hockey team designated as varsity club. The team competes at the ACHA Division I level in the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League. In addition, University of Michigan – UM Dearborn students are eligible to purchase student tickets to Michigan Wolverines football games.
