The Government of India in 1962-63 sought the advice of the Ford Foundation/UNESCO team of internationally known mass communication specialists who recommended the setting up of a national institute for training, teaching and research in mass communication. The state of the art "MANCH" (Auditorium) of the Institute has a seating capacity of 418m, built on a covered area of 1232 sp.mt. Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi has soundproof hall, multi-media projection facility, stage furnished with motorized curtains, projection screens, stage lighting, fire sensors, car parking and cafeteria etc.
Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi was established in response to a perceived need to evolve a methodology and a mechanism to make efficient and effective use of communication resources as part of the country's overall development strategy. The blueprint for the institute was drawn up by a team of internationally renowned mass communication specialists, representatives of UNESCO and of the media in the country. The team was headed by Dr. Wilbur Schramm, the well known authority on communication.
In the past thirty three years, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi has gained recognition from around the world and from UNESCO as a centre of excellence in the field of communication teaching, training and research, providing knowledge and skills to young communicators in a variety of disciplines including print journalism, photo journalism, radio journalism, television journalism, development communication, communication research, advertising and public relations.
Mass media play a vital role in our lives. We are witnessing a revolution in communication. With the convergence and integration of communication technologies. With this the demand for training to meet the new challenges and the need for understanding the media, their reach, access and impact have increased manifold. Over the decades, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi has created a niche for itself in the field of mass communication education, research and training. It is playing a pivotal role by organising suitable training courses to meet the new challenges of training and skilled manpower to make the best use of communication resources for national development and growth.
Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi conducts two major training programmes, four one year post graduate diploma courses and two four month diploma courses in Development Journalism and Refresher Courses for the personnel of the Indian Information Service working in various media units of the Central Government. Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi also conducts each year a number of specialised short term courses to meet the training needs of media personnel working in government and public sector organizations. The Faculty of Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi consists of both academicians and practicing media professionals. They have done significant work in their field of specialization. In addition, visiting faculty from leading media organizations also interact with scholars and trainees.
Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi has the largest specialized library in mass communication in the country. It has collected about 26,000 volumes on different aspects of mass communication and allied subjects such as print media, broadcasting, advertising, communication, communication research, public relations, radio and television, film, information technology and traditional media. The library also stocks books on economics, political science, international relations, sociology, psychology and current affairs.
The Periodical Section of the library subscribes to more than 100 periodicals and over 40 leading newspapers. It has documented about 20,000 articles from periodicals on various aspects of mass communication. Indian and Foreign journals covering a wide spectrum of mass communication such as, communication research, journal of public relations, gazetter, journal of broadcasting, etc. are subscribed. Indian journals on mass communication such as Communicator, Vidura, etc. are also received in the library.
Publication of books and journals is another important activity of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi in promoting scholarship in the discipline. The Institute has a publication program to bring out research studies, teaching manuals and books related to various aspects of communication.
Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi publishes two journals, "Communicator" (in English) and "Sanchar Madhyam" (in Hindi). Both journals come out twice a year. The focus of the journal is to publish the best available scholarship on all aspects of mass communication and related fields. The journals publish articles and book reviews examining a wide range of issues in communication theory, research and practice. The journals seeks to be a forum for communication scholarship and application and is specially interested in research which is multidisciplinary, based on the experience of India and other developing countries.
Photography is being taught in all the regular as well as short courses in the institute. WE have 12 Nikon S.L.R Cameras and also their accessories like Zoom Lens tele Photo lens wide angle e.t.c. Indian Institute of Mass Communication-IIMC Delhi also organise courses on photography for the professional photographers working in the various Government, semi- Government and Public undertakings. We have a samll dark room for the film processing.
