‘Gandhi Seva Sadan- Kathakali and Classic Arts Academy’ popularly known as “SADANAM KATHAKALI AKADEMY", was started in 1953 as a cultural wing of GANDHI SEVA SADAN. It is the third Kathakali training center of Kerala after Kerala Kalamandalam and P.S.V. Natyasangam. Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad is functioning in a panoramic, sprawling ten acre campus of its own in Perur Village of Ottapalam Taluk of Palakkad District, in Kerala, some 12 kilometers east of and 22 kilometers west of Ottapalam and Palakkad Railway Stations respectively. Nedumbassery(Cochin), Karipur(Calicut) and Coimbatore are the nearest Airports. Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad is about 200 metres from Pathiripala bus stop on the Shornur-Palakkad Bus route.
The growth of Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad was so fast that it had to be separated from the parent body during 1973 and was made an independent entity, as a registered society under societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, with its own Constitution, Bye laws and Governing body. Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad celebrated its Golden Jubilee on the 17th and 18th of January 2003.It has a beautiful semi circular Auditorium with a seating capacity of about 800. The auditorium is specially designed to stage Kathakali Programmes.
Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad gives short term training in Kathakali international students as well as students from outside Kerala. A number of international students have successfully completed their training in Sadanam at different points of time. Several of these students availed scholarships from their native countries for their training in Kathakali. Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad have convenient, comfortable and affordable boarding and lodging facilities for such short term students. Special tutors are appointed for those students who desire to have intensive short term course. Students between the ages 10 and 14 are selected for the above Courses. Uzhichil -traditional oil massaging-is given to dance students for 2-3 months in a year, during the rainy season of June-August.
Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad pays scholarships/stipends to most of the talented students who are selected for the Diploma courses, to meet their expenses for boarding, loading and tuition fees."The Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad played the execution of Dussassana, and extract of the Mahabharata epic. The audience were delighted and the authors had an overwhelming success. Everybody was eager to understand and learn more about this wonderful art, enacted by its masters. At the end of every performance a long standing ovation saluted the performers. After Paris, the artistes went to Geneva where they also had the great success."
Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad also has short-term training courses in Kathakali, which are basically meant for students from outside Kerala. For those, who are interested in undergoing intensive training,Sadanam provides the assistance of special tutors. Over the years, the center was responsible for churning out quite a good number of students from abroad, who had undergone training in various disciplines of Kathakali.Eminent personalities, forming part of the faculty at Kathakali Sadanam - Palakkad at various points of time itself stand testimony to the status of the institute as a leading center for learning Kathakali in Kerala. The centre was fortunate enough to have masters like Padmasree Guru Kunchu Kurup, Thekkinkattil Ramunni Nair, Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair and Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair to hold the reigns of Kathakali training at Sadanam.
