Medical College and Hospital - Kolkata is also commonly known as Calcutta Medical College. It was founded in 1835 as Medical College in Kolkata, India, ‘the first college of European medicine in Asia’. The reason for establishing this college was to guide native youths irrespective of caste and creed in the principles and practices of medical science in accordance with the mode adopted in Europe.
Medical College and Hospital - Kolkata was the premier institution in India imparting a systematic education in western medicine. The classes were started in an old house at the back of the Hindu College. In May 1835, new premises were built on land which was donated by Mutty Lal Seal. During the first year of study, number of lectures on anatomy and physiology were given. O'Shaughnessy delivered a basic course of lectures on Chemistry from January to March 1836 and a second course from April to September. During 1837 and 1838, the staff of the College was increased and enriched by the appointment of CC Eggerton as Professor of Surgery and Clinical Surgery, Nathaniel Wallich as Professor of Botany and R O'Shaughnessy as demonstrator of Anatomy. A period of modest rise in the number of students was followed by the increase from 1891-92 till 1901-02, and then a fall in 1906-07, exactly during the period of the disorder of the swadeshi movement in Bengal. An important change occurred in 1906 when the Calcutta University decided to stop the LMS examination held since 1861 and henceforth award only the degrees of MB and MD.
