University of Mumbai, Maharshi Dayanand College was set up in 1962 for the upliftment of children of the disadvantaged sections of society. The college was set up by Late Shri Mangaldas Verma, a noted industrialist and philanthropist and named it after the great reformer and founder of the Arya Samaj - `Maharshi Dayananad Saraswati`.
Maharshi Dayanand College is located on Dr. S. S. Rao Road, Mangaldas Verma Chowk, Parel, Mumbai, just opposite Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and Veterinary College and Hospital.
Maharshi Dayanand College main Library is Air- conditioned and is located in a separate building at the rear of the college. The Library is in three parts i.e. Arts, Sc. & Commerce section. The Library supports and extends the academic education of an Institution. It helps in meeting the teaching needs of the faculty and provides study facilities, educational and recreational reading to all the students and staff of the institution. The College also has the privilege of having an audio visual centre.
Maharshi Dayanand College has a post-graduate laboratory in Organic Chemistry which is under the guidance of Dr. A. S. Gupta, Reader & Head of Chemistry Dept. and is functioning in the name of "P. C. Verma Research Center". Special attention has been given to develop anti-tuberculosis drugs which are still considered as one of the dreaded disease.
Maharshi Dayanand College has a fully fledged counseling center for its students. The College has a provision for Psychological testing, Counseling and guidance.
Maharshi Dayanand College psychologist deals with 1-2 cases of counseling each day. They deal with a wide variety of cases on regular basis. Some students approach them for vocational guidance and aptitude testing. Some of the major problems that are dealt with in the center consist of psychotherapy and analysis for psychiatric disorders such as - Schizophrenia, MDP - manic depressive psychosis, Depression, Obsessive compulsive disorders, Conversion hysteria, Suicidal thoughts and attempters, Addictions, sexual abuse and so on. Because of the socio economic background of the students there are some unique problems of the students.
Maharshi Dayanand College offers its students B.A., B.sc and B.com degrees. It also offers Post Graduate courses M.Sc. Part I and II and M.Sc. by Research in Chemistry and Zoology and it also offers Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Zoology, Gujrati, Kannada and Marathi.
