National Institute of Technology - NIT Durgapur is a Deemed University was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully-funded leading Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Durgapur was known Regional Engineering College, Durgapur. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls within the campus. A canteen for everyone in the campus is situated near the main academic building and there is also another canteen at the rear exit of the main academic building of the Institute. Most of the teachers and the staff members reside in the residential quarters given by the Institute. A modern Guest House beside the Director's Bungalow is also set up in the campus to accommodate the guests of the Institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a Shopping Complex which meets all the daily requirements of the residents. A model co-educational higher secondary school has also been set up for the children of the employees of the Institute. Also, there is a branch of State Bank of India, a branch of Canara Bank and a Post-Office within the campus.
The Central Library is one of the most important central facilities of

The library has a collection of more than 1.2 lakh volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books & Bound vols. of Journals, Standards etc. The book database is available through OPAC Online Public Access Catalogue.

Whenever needed a Medical Unit-cum-Hospital is there with arrangement for both indoor and outdoor treatment of the patients. For any specialized treatment, the patients are generally referred to the State Government Hospital located at the other end of the city, or some Advanced Medical Centre.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Durgapur has a fully fledged Physical Training Department for the students of the Institute. Students are trained in various sports and games by well experienced and qualified coaches who are arranged by the Department of Physical Training. The Institute playgrounds (Oval & Lords) are always busy with outdoor activities like Cricket, Football, and Hockey etc. In addition, there are courts for Volleyball and Basketball. Student Activity Centre has an Indoor Auditorium and a Gymnasium with latest equipments. The Auditorium has Table-tennis and Badminton facilities.
The students of the Institute run many hobby clubs like Photography club, Music club, Science club, Debate club and Fine Arts club. The Institute also organizes its annual cultural festival ‘RECSTACY’ each year and various inter-college cultural competitions are also organized.
