National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela was founded in 1961 under the vision of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its keystone was laid by the then Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The College is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela, Orissa was earlier known as the Regional Engineering College-REC and is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela was ranked as the second best NIT in the country by TEQIP for the year 2009. The amount of quality research taken on by the institute is also phenomenal.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela is run by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology Rourkela Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. The government of India has recognized the institute as a leading institution of repute and has developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The institute has been well-run by two foreign collaborative funding agencies: the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-UK.REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.
The campus of
National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela is located at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 spread over an area of 2.62 km² of land provided by the Government of Orissa. The courses are generally residential on a full-time basis. The main building houses some departments like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities. The other departments, the lecture gallery, the workshops, the institute canteen and the audio-visual hall surround the main building.
Residential accommodation of
National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela is offered to all faculty, staff and students. There are eight hostels for the students within the campus: four for male graduates, two for male postgraduates, one for all the girl students and one for married students doing doctorates or research. There is another restaurant-cum-canteen close to the student halls of residence, along with an ATM, an ice-cream parlor, an all-purpose needs store and a barber shop.

The residential campus of
National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela is set up with a stadium which has been a host for several national level university tournaments and is named after Dilip Tirkey, the former Indian Hockey captain who comes from this part of Orissa. There are various courts near the hostels for playing lawn tennis, basketball and volleyball. A swimming pool and a cricket stadium have also been constructed.
