Establishment: Memorial University is one of the oldest universities in St. John’s, Canada. It began as Memorial University College (MUC), which opened in September 1925 at a campus on Parade Street in St. John's. The first president was J. L. Paton. It was established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who had lost their lives on active service during the First World War. It was again rededicated for the dead in the Second World War. The Marine Institute, Grenfell Campus and the Harlow Campus were established in 1992, 1975 and 1969 respectively.

The university not only provides recreational facilities besides excellent education, but also caters hostel facilities through on campus housing at the St. John's campus in two residential buildings; Paton College and Burton's Pond. The former offers dormitory style accommodations for roughly 1000 students in ten residences, called "Houses", while the latter Burton's Pond apartments housing for 500 single students in four bedroom apartments, and provide a more autonomous lifestyle on campus. Small family apartments are available for students with a family.
Infrastructure: Memorial University of Newfoundland has teaching and learning facilities all across Newfoundland and Labrador, and abroad, with world class infrastructure. At St. Johns campus, majority of the academic buildings are located around Prince Philip Drive, a major arterial road in the city. The Marine Institute, also located in St. John’s, is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine education and applied research. It has unique facilities such as a full ships bridge simulator and the world’s largest flume tank. The Grenfell campus is set amidst beautiful scenery with outdoor adventures just a step away.
Faculty: Memorial University of Newfoundland has six faculties namely: Arts, Business Administration, and Science etc. Dieticians of Canada, a professional organisation has accredited a program of the Department of Biochemistry of MUN. This will allow graduates to become certified dieticians. The Faculty of Business Administration is also renowned as a leader in Canadian business education.
