Overview: The Wellington Institute of technology (WelTech) is the biggest tertiary education provider of Wellington city in New Zealand.
Established In: WelTech was formed in 2001 through a merger between the Central Institute of Technology in New Zealand and the Hutt Valley Polytechnic. WelTech is a public tertiary Institute which was established and funded by the Government of New Zealand.
Specialty: All students of WelTech opt for work experience as a part of their qualification, along with their academic curriculum, which is one of their key features. Thus the institute, each year, produces highly productive graduates with top notch skills and knowledge. WelTech’s greatest pride is the up-to-date technology that it provides. They have invested a million dollars to bring in and upgrade the teaching equipments and facilities. They own a fully functional hairdressing and beauty salon, gymnasium, restaurants, specialist’s computer softwares, machinery and equipments.
Study Centre: Wellington Institute of technology has four campuses in all, the main one being located in Petone, which is fifteen minutes away from the inner city. This campus is beautifully landscaped by beaches and playing fields. It is close to the Wellington harbor, with numerous trendy shops and cafes nearby. Transportation is not a problem, as both buses and train facilities are easily available, and convenient to use. Some of the major courses offered by WelTech are Engineering, Design and Digital Technology, Information Technology, Health, Human Sciences, Hospitality courses, Travel and Tourism, Communication, Counselling, Adult Education and Training and many more. The Auckland Campus of Wellington, located in Wellesley Street and the Christchurch campus of Wellington both offer many courses in mainly Alcohol and Drug Studies and Counseling. The fourth Wellington Campus is the Wellington CBD Campus, located in the heart of the city, on Church Street, and offers a range of courses on design and digital media, hair and beauty courses, business administration and marketing management.
Hostel: There are no hostel accommodations provided by Wellington Institute of technology - Lower Hutt. However, there are many affordable and comfortable accommodation facilities in the city. For domestic students who wish to stay for a short term in the city, there are homestay options that provide you the comforts of home while being away from home. You get a private room with four proper meals everyday. These homestays are arranged with families in the Greater Wellington region. For a long term stay, you can easily rent an independent appartment or move in with other students, as per your convenience. Many print ads and online sites like Trade me Flatemates, NZ Flatemates and their Student Hub will help you out with the same. International students can also go for homestays, as they are extremely convenient, affordable, and helps these students work on their English. It helps you meet new people, and know more about the city. As per 2012, the costs of homestay comes upto $NZ 240 per week. There is also an additional non refundable placement fee of $NZ 200.
Infrastructure: All campuses provide world class teaching facilities and equipments that are perfectly designed with an aim of providing sound knowledge of structural engineering, water engineering, surveying, geotechnics and the many more courses that they offer.
