National Institute of Rural Development-NIRD is the country's apex body for undertaking training, research, action research and consultancy functions in the rural development sector. It works as an autonomous organization supported by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. An eleven-member Executive Council oversees the implementation of policies. The Academic Committee helps in planning the training and research programs. The Director General is the Chief Executive and heads the management team. To examine and analyze the factors contributing to the improvement of economic and social well-being of people in rural areas on a sustainable basis with focus on the rural poor and the other disadvantaged groups through research, action research and consultancy efforts. To facilitate the rural development efforts with particular emphasis and focus on the rural poor by improving the knowledge, skills and attitudes of rural development officials and non-officials through organizing training, workshops and seminars.
National Institute of Rural Development-NIRD is located on a sprawling 42 hectare campus 17 kms from the city of Hyderabad. It is a world class center for rural development training and research. NIRD has every facility in-house for trainees and participants from India and abroad.
National Institute of Rural Development-NIRD is equipped with modern computer lab and communication technology, Internet, e-mail, Wi-Fi, Latest Hardware, Software, LAN and other IT facilities enhance the utilization of database available at each center. Besides, well equipped classrooms, guest houses, a medical center, yoga and indoor and outdoor games(Tennis, Shuttle badminton, Volley Ball) take care of health and recreational needs of participants on the campus. Also there is a gymnasium facility for various types of exercises. Information dissemination of the research and training output is undertaken through a quarterly Journal of Rural Development, Research Highlights and Recommendations of Seminars, and Workshops and research reports, monographs, occasional papers etc. Over 200 titles are published so far. It offers Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development Management.
The National Institute of Rural Development-NIRD library acts as a resource centre and a clearinghouse of information on rural development in India. Government publications, research reports, and data apart from journals and other unpublished material form a massive resource base of the library. It has developed a computerized database of the resources in its collection. The computerized database consists of nearly two lakh references. The library has also fully automated its day-to-day operations.
