PGW stands for
Philadelphia Gas Works is a public natural gas utility which is owned and operated by the municipal of Philadelphia. It is one of the largest companies of natural gas, came into existence on February 1836 when first forty six gas lights get started between
Vine and south streets of Philadelphia. The company came under the city ownership in 1897 and with the coming of 1940 it increased its supply to about 500, 000 customers in Philadelphia and that time most of the gas produced by the company was carbureted water gas.
