Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University – TNPESU Chennai was established by an Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2004, is unique and the first of its kind in India as an affiliation University, exclusively for Physical Education and Sports. After obtaining the accent from his Excellency the president of India on 5th August 2005, the said act came into force with effect from 15th September 2005.
It is a rare coincidence that the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University – TNPESU Chennai has started functioning from December 2005, declared by the United Nations as International year for Sport and Physical Education. At present the University has four Faculties, eleven Departments and ten affiliated Colleges. Further the University now offers select Physical Education and Allied Courses, through collaborative programme and Distance Education stream also.
Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University – TNPESU Chennai has five departments which offer innovative courses in the areas of Physical Education, Yoga, Exercise physiology and Bio mechanics, Sports Management, Sports Psychology and Sociology, Advanced Sports Training and Sports Technology at post graduate and research levels. Modern competitive sports require highly scientific and technical support systems that enable an individual athlete to achieve peak performance consistently.
Physical Education is an inter-disciplinary subject involving a study of Education, Human Physiology, Anatomy and Social Sciences. It is the foundation for lifelong fitness and high performance in competitive sports. The Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University – TNPESU Chennai department of physical education has designed a relevant curriculum that includes both theoretical and practical components. The Physical Education teachers graduating from the Department will be fully equipped to be employed as Physical Directors in schools, colleges and Universities and also as Sports Managers and Sports Officers in public and private sector institutions. The education imparted by the Department to the Physical Education teacher- trainees will make them good teachers.
