Manukau Institute of Technology - MIT Manukau and the University of Auckland formed a strategic alliance in 1996 to benefit the students of both institutions. Manukau Institute of Technology - MIT Manukau must grow, diversify and distribute delivery to address gaps in current provision and to meet the predicted skills demand and tertiary education needs of Auckland. This will require the Institute to significantly increase delivery volumes to ensure that tertiary education rates in the wider City and in the central and southern sub regions in particular are increased to at least current national levels. This will include addressing gaps within central Auckland arising from the devolution of sub degree provision by AUT University and the centralisation/consolidation of private training enterprises. Manukau Institute of Technology - MIT Manukau will introduce Diploma level mechanical and electrical engineering programmes in central Auckland from 2011 and will address other gaps as these become evident in response to these shifts.
There are a wide range of activities undertaken at Manukau Institute of Technology - MIT Manukau, involving both internal initiatives and co-operative links with a range of external organisations. Manukau Institute of Technology - MIT Manukau continues to encourage research to inform teaching and to further develop a research culture by supporting staff in a variety of research activities. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of the connection of the Institute with the wider business community through research.
