NorthTec - Whangarei originally opened as the Northland Community College in 1978, with a staff of ten tutors, College was hailed as "a significant centre for learning and an administrative centre for courses to be run in the wider community." In 1987 Northland Community College changed its name to Northland Polytechnic [Tai Tokerau Wananga] and to NorthTec [Tai Tokerau Wananga] in June 2006.

NorthTec - Whangarei supports and encourages the development of our staff and a strong research culture. Staff participate in a wide range of research and other developmental activities, with particular encouragement being given to new researchers to attend workshops and presentations. College staff and established researchers are increasingly collaborating both internally and externally to ensure the quality of what we offer our students.
The NorthTec Council is the governance body for the polytechnic. The Council provides oversight for the financial management and operational performance of NorthTec - Whangarei ensuring that NorthTec achieves its objectives, maintains the quality of the its programme delivery and meets the obligations imposed upon it by central government through the Tertiary Education Commission. NorthTec - Whangarei Council currently consists of four ministerial appointees and two independent appointees.
NorthTec - Whangarei puts a strong focus on student-centred and learning-centred values, and has embraced the concept of the Learning College which places learning first. Technology is used in the classroom and throughout campus to improve and expand student learning. Students at NorthTec - Whangarei are expected to take full responsibility for attending classes, keeping up with their studies, doing reading of required materials and completing course requirements.
Learning at the tertiary level in New Zealand may be different to what is expected in your home country. Part of the exciting challenge of studying in another country is learning how to learn in different ways to those you have experienced previously. New Zealand puts value on independence in learning. As part of your induction into your NorthTec programme, the Programme Manager and tutors will explain what is expected of you and how to approach your study programme. NorthTec - Whangarei library team are here to help, and you will be amazed at the information and services this team have at their fingertips! If you’re studying at Raumanga, the library is a great space on campus to do some research, catch up with friends, or just keep warm (or cool in summer!) until the next class. And for those on other campuses, the library has a brilliant mailing service, so you can order books from the library itself or from their huge ‘virtual’ collection of just about anything you can think of.
Whether you have the flu, feel stressed, need contraception, or just a friendly face, you will find the help you need from the lovely nursing team at the health centre.Don’t wait until you’re feeling unwell – take advantage of the centre’s wellness programmes and benefit from cervical screening, vision and hearing testing or help to quit smoking. It’s all free! With confidentiality guaranteed, the health centre is a great first step for any health problem. If you need referral to a GP or other service, this will be organised for you – no hassle.The health centre at NorthTec - Whangarei is open during term time from 9am – 3pm Monday to Thursday, and nurses make regular visits to all NorthTec campuses.
Student Cafe is a great place for students of the NorthTec - Whangarei and tutors to relax between classes, and fill up on a delicious range of freshly made hot and cold meals.Favourites include fresh salads, scones, muffins, filled rolls, salad wraps, sushi, fruit salad and fresh fruit. NorthTec - Whangarei campus fitness centre is the perfect solution for you! For just $25 a semester, you can access the fitness centre, complete with a dedicated gym instructor, free weights and a full range of cardio equipment. The gym instructor offers everything from personal training programmes and supervision to fitness tests and strength training. One-on-one personal training is also available, and students can take part in group fitness classes, focusing on Tae Bo and boxing-style cardio routines.
