The Indian Law Institute-ILI was founded in 1956 primarily with the objective of promoting and conducting legal research. The objectives of The Indian Law Institute-ILI as laid down in its Memorandum of Association are to cultivate the science of law, to promote advanced studies and research in law so as to meet the social, economic and other needs of the Indian people, to promote systematization of law, to encourage and conduct investigations in legal and allied fields, to improve legal education, to impart instructions in law, and to publish studies, books, periodicals, etc.
The Indian Law Institute-ILI is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860; The Indian Law Institute has the requisite independence and academic freedom to carry out its objectives. The membership of the Institute is now nearly three thousand representing the persons interested in the study and advancement of law.
The Indian Law Institute-ILI offers Master of Law at Post Graduate Level and diploma in Laws. The Indian Law Institute-ILI was formally inaugurated by the first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad on December 12, 1957 at the Central Hall of Parliament, New Delhi in the presence of the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.R. Das, the then Chief Justice of India and late Dr. K.M. Munshi the then Executive Chairman of the Institute and Prof. L.R. Siva Subramanian the then Dean, Law Faculty of Delhi University.

The prime objective of The Indian Law Institute-ILI is to cultivate and promote the science of law and to contribute substantially in reforming the administration of justice, so as to meet the socio-economic aspirations and needs of the people through law and its instrumentalities. The Institute has achieved the place of a premier center of national & international legal research and studies, in which the lawyers from all branches of the profession, judges, government officials and academicians have been participating.
Library of The Indian Law Institute-ILI established in 1956, is one of the leading law libraries in Asia and attracts scholars from all over the World for legal research. The University Grants Commission has recognized the library as a place for legal research leading to doctorate degree in law and political science. Every year thousands of law researchers from different parts of the world visit the library for research. The Judiciary, Central and State Government officers, various Embassies and High Commissions in Delhi have also been using the referral services of the Library.
The Indian Law Institute-ILI Library collection development policy emphasizes the acquisition of the complete primary resources of India. The legal resources of the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also extensively acquired. Over the years, the library has developed collection on jurisprudence, judicial process, constitutional law, intellectual property, public international law, environmental law, human rights, criminal law, international business transactions, laws of the European Community, and laws of the ASEAN nations.
