Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya is privileged to have the blessings and good wishes of many important and distinguished Indians. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan delivered its first Convocation address on 1.3.1958 and blessed students and the institution. Similarly Dr. C.D. Deshmukh delivered the Convocation address on 16.11.1960, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 10.12.1961 and Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar on 15.2.1963. Prof. R. Chidambaram, the well known atomic scientist was the Chief Guest at its convocation held on 28.2.2002, while Dr. J.S. Verma, farmer Chief Justice of India delivered the address in convocation on 7th March, 2005.
Dr. Kunji Lal Dubey, who subsequently became the Speaker, Vidhan Sabha of M.P., was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya. Subsequently, distinguished academicians like Dr. Dhirendra Verma, Dr. Raj Bali Pandey and Dr. H.P. Dikshit adorned the post. Prof. H.P. Dikshit later became the Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya was established at the centre of Tribal and undeveloped areas of the State "to spearhead the assault on rural ills". For this purpose, it established a Department of Tribal Studies in 1990. The Department studies (i) Personal Laws of tribals (ii) their socio-economic structure, (iii) their political institutions, and (iv) their history, culture and religious practices and beliefs. For this purpose the department works in close cooperation with Departments of Economics, Political Science, Ancient History, Law and Philosophy. The Department prepares students for M.A. (Tribal Studies) and Ph.D. degrees of the University and is one and the only of its kind in India.
Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya has produced a large number of internationally acclaimed academicians and scientists, a number of distinctions and awards have been given to its teachers and students and many international fellowships have been bagged by the Faculty members. In the past 5 years, more than 300 research scholars have earned Ph.D. as well as D.Sc. and D. Litt. degrees. Various research Projects in different disciplines, with an outlay of around Rs. 5 Crores have been completed during this period. Currently several research projects are in progress. The University is thus playing a key role in higher education in Central India.
The Academic Staff College of the Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya is one among 51 such Colleges functioning in the country and enjoys "A" grade status awarded by the University Grants Commission. It aims at promoting academic excellence and for that purpose conducts orientation courses for newly appointed teachers and refresher courses for other teachers.
Rani Durgavati was born on 5th October 1524 A.D. in the family of famous Chandel emperor Keerat Rai. She was born at the fort of Kalanjar(Banda, U.P.). Chandel Dynasty is famous in the Indian History for the valiant king Vidyadhar who repulsed the attacks of Mehmood Gaznavi. His love for sculptures is shown in the world famed temples of Khajuraho and Kalanjar fort. Rani Durgavati's achievements further enhanced the glory of her ancestral tradition of courage and patronage of arts.
Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya is constructed on a large area of approximately 11 Acres in the heart of Jabalpur City. Facilities such as Library, Hostel, Sports Complex, Canteen etc., are available in the college premises. Activities like NCC, NSS and various other cultural programs are part of the curriculum. The motto of the college is to impart quality education for the overall development of the girls and transform them into responsible citizens of the country. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya was granted the autonomous status by the University Grants Commission in 1987 for 10 years and now the autonomous status of the college is extended till the year 2007.
The Computer Centre of Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1989-90 with 10 PCs under DOS and a mini under UNIX when the university started its first computer course of P.G.Diploma in Computer Applications. The lab has been upgraded now to Pentium-IV with networking and the Latest software. Computer Centre also runs short-term job-oriented computer courses. Awareness programmes for employees and research scholars are regularly run.
Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya has in-house computerized activities of Examination and Result Processing, Payroll and Accounts, Provident Fund Account & Returns and Department-wise Budget & Account. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya has helped Finance deptt. to computerise and network its activities including its students interface.
