The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL is affiliated to Deemed University.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL was founded in 1959 at the initiative of Shri V. K. Krishna Menon and inaugurated the same year by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, with the objective to “foster nationwide, the study and development of International Law and to encourage the comparative study of the application of International Law in other States”. The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL has been publishing the Indian Journal of International Law since its inception, which has attained a high standard and is held in high esteem the world over. The ISIL has also a good library, which is used by scholars from all over India. The ISIL organizes annual conferences and seminars on international issues of contemporary interest.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL is housed at V.K.Krishna Menon Bhawan, Bhagwan Dass Road, opposite to the Supreme Court of India and next to the Indian Law Institute (ILI). It has two in house air-conditioned conference halls with a seating capacity of 80 &100 respectively, a full-fledged air-conditioned auditorium of 250 seats for organising seminars/conferences and symposiums, a number of class rooms, office spaces etc. The Society also started bestowing the ISIL Doctoral Scholarships to Ph.D. Research Scholar registered in the Indian universities. There are two scholarships during an academic year. The beneficiaries are preferred by the Committee appointed by the Executive Council.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL offers an internship programme for LL. B. students providing opportunities to become involved with the research work of our society. All positions are based in ISIL require a minimum commitment of 8 hours per day. All internships are unpaid. The teaching wing of the ISIL- the Indian Academy of International Law & Diplomacy, runs post-graduate diploma courses in various branches of international law. The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL organises every year a Summer Course in international law to bring to you the current developments and their importance.
International Law Conference is an important triennial event of The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL. It is organised to provide a forum for in-depth discussion on the emerging trends in various branches of international law among the practitioners, teachers and scholars of international law from different nationalities.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organising an annual regional round Moot Court Competition in memory of the founder of the ICRC - Henry Dunant, to be held on October 2008 at Society's premises. The ISIL organizes on regular basis seminars, panel discussions, workshops, National Conferences and Special lectures on contemporary topics of international law.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL also publishes ISIL Year Book of International Humanitarian and Refugee Law, focusing on the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) and refugee law. Besides articles, notes and comments, book reviews, the Year Book also contains important documents published on the subjects during the year under review. Prof. V. S. Mani is the Chief Editor of the Year Book. Vinai Kumar Singh is Assistant Editor of the Year Book.
The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL library started functioning in the early sixties and has over the years built-up a fairly good collection, approximately 25,000 volumes of books and journals. It receives more than one hundred reputed journals of international law and allied areas. The reference section has an appreciable collection of material indices, reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and legal lexicons. An important feature of the library is its collection of primary documents, e.g. documents of the United Nations (UN), reports of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and International Law Commission (ILC). The library offers following services: circulation, reference, inter library loan, bibliographic, press clippings, photocopying and exchange of publications. Access to library is available on liberal terms.
The research team of The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL conducts research works includes collection of materials, collation, research, reporting, review and formatting on various topics pertaining to International Criminal Law, International Trade Law, International Human Rights, International Environmental Law etc. in regular basis. The Indian Society of International Law-ISIL has successfully undertaken several projects allotted by the various Ministries of the Government of India and other academic and research institutions. The ISIL completed a prestigious project allotted by the Ministry of External Affairs on Issues relating to Private International Law as affecting the non-resident Indians. Presently ISIL undertakes a project allotted by the Ministry of External Affairs on International Conventions on Human Rights.
