On 5 September 1857 University of Madras was established by an act of Legislative Council of India. It was founded by
Mr. George Norton who was also the president of the University board. Awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC), Madras University is one of the university in India to have been awarded the top-rated ‘5 star’ accreditation.
