The Founders of the campus had first started the New English School, Pune in 1880 and later established the Deccan Education Society in 1884. This was followed by the bold step to start the first ever privately managed college in India, on the 2nd January 1885, naming it as the Fergusson College. The name was given in appreciation of the support of Sir James Fergusson, the then Governor of Bombay Province and also the first Patron of the Deccan Education Society. Principal William Wordsworth, the grandson of the famous poet, was the master of the ceremonies at the inaugural function of the college. Thus, the Fergusson College bridged the gulf between the great city of London and Poona, the city of the Peshwas and on this occasion Sir Fergusson wished God’s blessings on this new venture.The college held these classes, for almost ten years, in the old Gadre Wada and other locations in Poona. A plot of about 37 acres was acquired on a 99 years’ lease in 1891 by the Deccan Education Society. The foundation stone of the Main building of the college, was laid in 1892 and the building was completed in 1895. Fergusson College started functioning on this campus in 1895. From then onwards, the college has grown from strength to strength and acquired a reputation as a nation-building institution. It has a place of pride in the hearts of the people, as a historical monument and a symbol of the country’s freedom struggle.
Fergusson College is blessed with a scenic green campus. A central garden surrounded by the century old Main Building, the N. M. Wadia Amphi Theatre and B. J. Wadia Library greet as one enters the campus. Separate buildings for various departments are spread over the campus from north to south. Large playgrounds, tennis courts, Botanical Garden and spacious hostel buildings are special features. The once barren hill on the west side of the campus, is now covered with greenery, thanks to the efforts of students and well-wishers.
Fergusson College, Pune has very good hostel accommodation for boys and girls. There are in all 6-hostel blocks, 4 blocks for gents and 2 blocks for ladies. The total intake capacity of the hostel is 587 students. The gents’ hostel blocks are located to the north of the campus and the ladies’ hostel blocks are on the eastern part of the campus. While academic excellence has been the main goal of our educational efforts, for the last 121 years, the participation and performance in sports, cultural activities, extra-curricular activities and military training, have also received due and minute attention of the authorities of the Fergusson College, Pune. The building of the Bai Jerbai Wadia Library, comprising of two floors, was completed in May 1929 with a munificent donation from the Wadia brothers. The entire first floor of the Library serves as a Reading Hall for students and is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate around 400 students at a time. This is perhaps one of the largest Reading Rooms of any Library in the State of Maharashtra.
The Main Library on ground floor more than 3,00,000 books and many research journals. Many research scholars and book-lovers have, over the years, donated a large number of their own personal collections; the Library has become fabulously rich in its collection. The library of Fergusson College, Pune provides extension services to students, teachers, scholars, research workers and senior citizens including scholars from abroad. Amphitheatre-It can comfortably seat 1000 persons, and if need be, even a thousand more have managed to squeeze themselves into it, on its three spacious floors. The semi-gothic design and the imposing height of the building, imparts to it a unique architectural ambience of historical significance. Kimaya-It is an open-air theatre on the north side of the campus. It is conceived and funded by Late Shri. Pu La Deshpande. After visiting Japan, he thought of creating some special open-air theatre for the students. Students use 'Kimaya' for developing their extra-curricular talent.
Fergusson College, Pune has earned an enviable reputation in teaching and research in the Sciences as well as in the Humanities. Students have a wide range of subjects to choose from in the Junior College as well as in Senior College wings. For ease in locating the academic programs at various levels, courses are grouped under Arts and Science streams.Fergusson College conducts classes right from Std. XI to Post Graduation. Certain departments provide research facilities leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D.
In 2004, Fergusson College was awarded an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The College also received the "Best College Award" amongst the colleges affiliated to the University of Pune in the academic year 2004-2005.
Fergusson College has consistently ranked amongst the top ten arts and science colleges in India for the past twelve years in the annual survey conducted by India Today-AC Nielsen-ORG-MARG and published in India Today, one of India's leading magazines.
