Stella Maris College a Catholic institution of higher education for women is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Madras and is partly residential.
Stella Maris College, which is under the direction of the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, is a minority institution that provides university education in a Christian atmosphere for deserving students, especially those belonging to the Catholic community. Others are also admitted irrespective of caste and creed and their rights of conscience are respected. Besides, the College commits itself to serve the economically weak, socially underprivileged and needy students. Beginning in a small one-storey building on August 15th, 1947, with an enrolment of 32 students, the college has at present over 3000 students housed in large buildings on the beautiful campus of "The Cloisters", Cathedral Road, Chennai.
Stella Maris College became autonomous in 1987 and has 13 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate programmes. Research programmes such as M.Phil and Ph.D and also postgraduate diploma courses are part of the academic curriculum. Stella Maris was granted permanent recognition in 1951. To the college belongs the unique credit of starting the Bachelor's degree in Western Music and History of Fine Arts as well as the Master's Degree in Social Work of the University of Madras.
Stella Maris College has also the distinction of being the first to introduce the M.A Degree course in Indian Music, and the first women's college in Madras to offer M.A English, Economics and Fine Arts.

Stella Maris College is to empower young women to face the challenges of life with courage and commitment, to be builders of a humane and just society, and to promote a learning community in which all, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, feel part of the collaborative high quality educational process which is value based and leads to holistic growth. Dr. Sr. Jasintha Quadras, fmm took office as the eighth Principal of Stella Maris College on May 1, 2008, after serving as Vice-Principal of the college for over three years. As an academician and administrator, she is committed to expanding academic opportunities for students and in helping to chart the future of Stella Maris for the next generation.

Stella Maris College is looked upon as an individual endowed by God with certain talents, with her own character and personality , which must be developed and perfected. Stella Maris looks to each of her students to uphold the standards of the College, not only within the College, but also beyond , and not only during her student years but all through her life. Stella Maris College possesses an excellent Library, which is situated in the heart of the campus. The Library has evolved over the years and is today recognized as one of the premier college libraries in Chennai incorporating the latest technological innovations
to make it user friendly and eminently accessible. Housed in a 3 storied building with ground, mezzanine and top floors the library is well equipped, comfortably furnished and has airy, spacious and well lit interiors.
Stella Maris College Library can accommodate around five hundred users at any given time and follows the open access system. This system allows any student/staff to pick and choose any book they like. The Dewey decimal classification is the system used in the Library. The library provides materials for under-graduates, post-graduates as well as professionals and scholarly researchers.
The Library of Stella Maris College has grown and progressed over the years incorporating technological innovations in its day to day working. Library is offering access to online journals, CD-ROM databases, e-mail, and the Internet. Since there are numerous materials available in electronic format, the library provides pointers to the internet reference materials of general interest as well as specialized subject interest. The library has 16 terminals. The collections and its services have grown. Library also provides better access to technology and the library has been very effective in providing assistance to faculty in the effective use of technology. They elect their own representatives at the beginning of each term who then assume responsibility for the varied activities of hostel life, which include socials, entertainments, inter-hostel sports, library and the mess. The college provides photocopying and telephone facilities for faculty and students at the DTP Centre.
