Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi was established in 1961, by Dr. (Mrs.) S. Malhan, the founder Director, to satisfy the rising urge of the contemporary woman for wider educational and professional avenues. The combined excellence of the educational curriculum along with realistic values and the commitment of its staff members soon saw the Institute establish itself as a leading centre for women education in the country.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi became a part of the University of Delhi in the year 1969. Since then, the college has expanded extremely. The Institute moved to its present modern building at Hauz Khas Enclave in 2001.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi is located in sylvan surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The attractive and spacious building is housed in a 3.5-acre (14,000 m2) plot area and offers a peaceful, serene but stimulating environment to the students. With the keystone was laid by the then President Giani Zail Singh in 1987. The building was later inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University, Prof. Deepak Nayyar in 2001. The campus has manicured lawns, spacious lecture theatres and laboratories, which are a delight to work in.
The Institute has an All India Charter catering to students from different countries of Asia and Africa. The total strength of the students currently is about 800.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi has a well equipped library in a duplex structure which has a very rich collection of more than 20,000 resource materials including text books, reference books, theses, journals and periodicals in Pure and Applied sciences, Home science, Microbiology and Education besides fiction and encyclopedia.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi has a modern audio studio, housed in twin sound proof rooms, equipped with 16 channel Analog audio mixer, audio-monitor, speakers & two track sound card. The studio is used to prepare students in various aspects of radio Journalism.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi also has a computer lab that is equipped with 40 computers with internet connectivity for use by students & faculty. It also has a spacious, air conditioned conference room on the first floor fitted with modern audio-visual facilities for conducting conferences and workshops.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi has very well qualified and experienced teachers who are instrumental in giving high standard of education to the students. The faculty has been actively involved in research work which has been recognized globally and has been published in foremost publications in the respective fields. The faculty is encouraged to participate in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops and has technical and professional affiliations.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi offers a three-year undergraduate course in Microbiology as well as a four-year integrated course in Elementary education. The college offers course in three year B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry.
Institute of Home Economics - IHE Delhi has had a long journey which was started with a two year Diploma course in Home Science, to regular degree courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level, a post-graduate diploma course as well as Ph.D. programmes.
