It is the oldest and a premier Women Polytechnic among the only three Women Polytechnics in HARYANA. It was opened for upliftment of Women section of the society. Now it has emerged as a leading, pace-setting and growing women education center in the field of Technical Education. Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women provides an excellent environment for learning to the students. It gives a beautiful and bewitching look due to its proper landscaping.

A Community Development wing was started in July 1994 to impart free training of six month's duration to the unemployed rural youths. The centers are established in the nearby area of Ambala particularly for women in rural areas. About 10 centers have been established for training in the field of Typing, Beauty Culture, Electrician, Designing, Carpentry, Book-Keeping and Accountancy etc.
Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women has Library is well classified, catalogued and well stocked with about 14 thousand volumes. 18 journals/magazines are regularly subscribed to supplement the knowledge of the students. it is the only library amongst the libraries of Polytechnics in Haryana which is fully classified and catalogued and with an open access system.
The laboratories of the Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women institute are most modern and fully equipped with the aid of World Bank assistance to make the training more relevant, useful and effective. The Workshop/Shops are equipped with modern machinery and provide all facilities to the students of the Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women. One Principal residence and 16 staff residences have been constructed under World Bank assisted Project with an expenditure of about Rs. 0.68 crore approximately.
Presently Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women institute there is a great rush for a seat in the women hostel. Only 160 girls have been accommodated in the ground and first floor which provides all modern amenities. Nine additional rooms for accommodating 27 girl students are being constructed under World Bank project.
Principal of the Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women is responsible for overall planning and management of the academic and administrative activities of the institute including optimal utilization of resources. Principal is the implementing authority of plans and polices of the Government notified from time to time. Principal performs the duties of Head of the office at the institute level. He is the competent authority for all cases of group D employees. Cases of group A, B & C also require the approval of Head of Institute before sending for the final approval at the Head Office.
