Established on September 17, 1962 with a sacred mission of illuminating the river-island and removing the darkness of ignorance, Majuli College – Jorhat is the premier institution of higher education in Majuli. What necessitated to the found the college at Kamalabari was the geographical isolation and educational backwardness of Majuli. Connecting it with the mainstream of the country was a challenge in the early sixties. It could be done only through the pursuit of higher learning. College offers different kind of undergraduate and diploma courses.
Majuli College – Jorhat is situated at Kamalabri, Majuli District: Jorhat, Assam. The central library of Majuli College – Jorhat is the mirror of the intellectual resources it possesses. The library of college is located in a separate building within the college premises. It is equipped with a commodious Reading Room for the benefit of both teachers and students and other general readers. There is a plan to extend the space of the Reading Room to accommodate larger numbers of readers in future. The library has at present a collection of ten thousand reading materials including text books, general books, reference books, special collections and manuscripts. The library regularly subscribes to more than ten newspapers, twelve magazines and a number of journals, both Assamese and English.
A two storied Girls' Hostel equipped with all facilities is under construction in Majuli College – Jorhat premises and is likely to be opened for use of the students in about six months from now. The hostel is expected to put an end to the long-standing problem of inadequate lodging facilities in the vicinity of the college being faced by the girls of the Majuli College – Jorhat.
There are six laboratories in all. Out of these six, there are four laboratories in Science, one laboratory in Arts and one common laboratory for both Arts & Science. They are Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Education and Geography respectively. These laboratories are running in newly constructed buildings in neat and clean atmosphere. Majuli College – Jorhat is located in the neighbourhood of a 30-Beded Rural Hospital. In the event of any emergency, government doctors are consulted immediately. Yet, we have a First-Aid Box at the disposal of a competent lecturer, who attends upon sick students suffering from temporary and non-serious ailments.
Majuli College – Jorhat has a spacious play-ground measuring an area of three acres of land. Out-door games are held on the play-ground during Annual College Sports' Week. Some of the out-door games are also held on the campus ground. Apart from Teachers' Common Room, there are two Students' Common Rooms : one for the boys and the other for the girls. The Common Rooms are well-furnished and well-equipped with facilities for playing table-tennis, carrom, chess, ludo and badminton.
There are two separate cycle stands on the campus : one for the students and the other for the teachers. A strict vigil is maintained on these stands so that no incident of theft occurs. Majuli College – Jorhat has a full-fledged canteen of its own in the college premises. Sweets, snacks and tea, etc. are served to both the teachers and the students to their full satisfaction. Health hazards are taken care of.
