Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore was established in 1955, is located in the southwestern part of Singapore. When Nanyang University (Nantah), the first Chinese-language University in Southeast Asia, was set up with donations from people of all walks of life. Nanyang University was built on land donated by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, a well-known clan association. Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) was established on the same campus in 1981 with government funding to educate practice-oriented engineers for the burgeoning Singapore economy.
In 1991, NTI became Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore with the absorption of the National Institute of Education. The alumni rolls of the former Nanyang University were transferred to NTU in 1996. In April 2006, NTU was corporatised. Autonomy brings about increased flexibility and new opportunities, allowing NTU to draw on its strengths to enhance global education and research, and to soar to greater heights on the world stage. The university's main 200-hectare garden campus, known as the Yunnan Garden campus, is in the south-western part of the island. It houses Singapore's largest on-campus residence infrastructure including 16 halls of residence for undergraduates and a graduate hall. The Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore Yunnan Garden campus, with its lush landscape and undulating terrain, is located in south-western Singapore, some 25 km (16 mi) from the city-centre. The original part of the campus was built in 1986 and the campus buildings are laid out on a master plan drawn up by architect Kenzo Tange. Members of the university community study and work in laboratories, lecture theatres and tutorial rooms. The School of Art, Design and Media has grassy-sloped roofs mimicking the rolling hills of the garden campus. The campus has an e-learning infrastructure on top of a wired and wireless network setup. Seminars and lectures are supported by facilities that allow multi-media presentations, video-conferencing and communication between lecture theatres and venues. Staff and students can choose to live in quarters and residential halls within the Nanyang Technological University – NTU Campus, and have access to leisure and recreational facilities. Currently, there are 16 Hall of Residences for the students within the campus. Students are able to choose from single or double-sharing rooms, although there have been proposals of triple room sharing. Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore has four colleges, comprising 12 schools. The College of Engineering, with six schools focused on technology innovation, enjoys wide renown and ranks fourth in the world in engineering publications. The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences has Singapore's first professional art school, the Humanities and Social Science School, and the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
The Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore Library develops and maintains extensive print and e-resources to support the research, teaching and learning activities of the University. The core collections encompass subjects in computer, electronic, materials, mechanical, aerospace, civil and environmental engineering, mass communication, business, banking and accounting, humanities, art and design and biological and life sciences. The building of the library collection is guided by the Collection Development Policy. This policy ensures that the Library's resources are aligned with the teaching and research strategies of the Nanyang Technological University – NTU Singapore. The policy and in particular the subject profiles will be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the University's strategic programmes and research activities. The Library has extensive holdings of over 600,000 volumes in our print collections. The collections are mostly open access, except for the AV (Audio-Visual) and thesis materials. The collection is classified according to the Library of Congress Classification System. The e-resources collection include over 130 subscribed online and CD-ROM databases, 36,000 unique e-journals, 147,000 e-books, and over 16,000 theses, student projects, research reports, etc. in full text. The campus network, which links together all computing systems on the campus, is managed by the University's Centre for IT Services (CITS). To supplement the fixed-line campus network, NTU implemented a campus-wide wireless network in 2000. This high-speed wireless network, capable of a transfer rate of up to 11 megabits per second, enables NTU staff and students equipped with mobile devices such as notebooks, PCs and PDAs to access all networked services from practically anywhere on the campus without the need of a hardwired network connection.
