Aims and Objectives of Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda University– RKMVU Howrah is intended to actualize Swami Vivekananda’s fundamental educational ideas of imparting life building, man-making and character-building education by combining the best elements of the East and the West. Mission of Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda University – RKMVU Howrah is a religious organization with extensive philanthropic and charitable activities, started in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda. It has been silently serving the country in various spheres like education, health, relief and rehabilitation, propagation of Indian cultural and spiritual heritage, etc., through its many centers in India and abroad for over a century. These centers are branches of Ramakrishna Mission (hence called branch-centers) and function under the overall administrative control of the headquarters at Belur Math in the district of Howrah in West Bengal. Belur Math is an international place of pilgrimage to which hundreds of thousands of devotees and admirers throng all through the year. It was here that Swami Vivekananda spent his last days before he attained maha-samadhi (final passing away) on 4 July 1902.
Vision of Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda University – RKMVU Howrah established Ramakrishna Mission as commanded by his Master, Sri Ramakrishna, for the secular and spiritual amelioration of humankind as a whole, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, nationality, gender or religion. His focus was on the individual emancipation of a human being from ignorance as well as the collective good of the society at all levels, physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual. To achieve this twofold objective at both the individual or microcosmic level as well as the collective or microcosmic level—atmano mokshartham jagaddhitaya cha, to quote his own words—he “set in motion a machinery which will bring noble ideas to the door of everybody”, “a lever for the good of humanity, at least in India, which no power can drive back”. Swami Vivekananda made Belur Math as the headquarters of the worldwide Ramakrishna Movement comprising the twin organizations of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. He envisioned that Belur Math would be a centre of great harmony and synthesis, not only of all religious beliefs and traditions, but also of arts and sciences and the various branches of knowledge, both secular and spiritual. In fact, on 2 July 1902, just two days before he passed away, he prophesied, standing at the Belur Math grounds: "The spiritual impact that has come to Belur [Math] will last fifteen hundred years, and it will be a great university.
