St Xaviers College - Kottayam started functioning in 1981. It is owned and managed by St. Xavier’s Church Kothavara. Starting of the college brightened the prospect of higher education in Vaikom Taluk and slowly a social and cultural evolution started banishing the dark cloud of illiteracy, ignorance , superstition etc.
Though the original sanction in 1981 was for starting three Arts and Commerce batches in the Pre- Degree with 80 students each, in the next year itself (1982) permission was granted to start two more Science batches. Subsequently, since 1982, the pre degree course has been complete with all the four groups. The year 1991 was a milestone in the history of St Xaviers College - Kottayam when it was upgraded by starting its first undergraduate course in physics. In 1993, another degree course in Economics and in 1995 the third one, B. Com also were started. Our long- cherished desire to give vocational orientation to education was rewarded by getting sanction for B.Sc. Zoology with aqua culture as vocational subject in 1998, B.A. Politics vocational in 1999 and B. Sc. Chemistry vocational in 2001. Thus the college now offers six Degree courses.
St Xaviers College - Kottayam is situated in a remote area, 10 km away from the nearest municipal town , Vaikom. Its campus is spread in 18 acres of land stretching beautifully on the banks of the Vembanad lake in Kottayam District. The library plays a central role in helping college achieve its mission of providing students a quality education. Beyond its immediate responsibility to provide the information services and resources that support the courses of study offered at the college, the library has the broader mission of fostering in our students the importance and necessity of lifelong learning. St Xaviers College - Kottayam library adequately equipped with books covering wide range of disciplines of academic and non-academic interest. The college also subscribes for international and national journals, periodicals and newspapers for the students and faculty members at the college library.
The Government of India introduced the National Service Scheme in Colleges and Universities in the year 1971-72. The Universities in Kerala implemented NSS programme from 1976-77. The first NSS unit of St Xaviers College - Kottayam started functioning in 1983. We have sanction for two units in the college. The aim of NSS is to educate the students through community service and enrich their personality and deepen their understanding of the social environment in which they live. The more specific objectives of the NSS are to arouse in the students a social commitment towards nation building and to provide them opportunities to work with people for community development.
There is a very active Parent Teacher Association in St Xaviers College - Kottayam . The executive committee has taken upon themselves the responsibility of providing amenities to the students in the college and to assist the college administration for the proper running of the college. Every parent or guardian becomes a member of the Association when their wards are admitted in the college. The office bearers are elected annually in the general body meeting.
