Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas was established on 4 August 1965. New vistas of knowledge were opened to the youth of the Sundarbans and new ideas emerged in their young minds. Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas owes its existence to the concerted efforts of a group of dedicated people who came forward enthusiastically with profuse donations of land, money and materials. The people of the vast areas supported the cause morally and emotionally. After overcoming all sorts of hurdles Sundarban Mahavidyalaya obtained recognition as an institution of higher education with the sanction and approval of affiliation by the University of Calcutta and subsequently by the University Grants Commission. Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas offers different kind of undergraduate courses.
Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas is situated at Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Responding to the social priorities to remove illiteracy, to spread education spatially and to inspire general awareness among the people, Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas has fixed its principal motto to educate the burgeoning youths and to enrich them intellectually. And thus it helps evolve progressively a newer and improved generation of youths every year. This emergence of new forces enhances upgrades and solidifies the social fabric of Kakdwip and its surrounding areas.
The library plays a central role in helping college achieve its mission of providing students a quality education. Beyond its immediate responsibility to provide the information services and resources that support the courses of study offered at the college, the library has the broader mission of fostering in our students the importance and necessity of lifelong learning. Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas library adequately equipped with books covering wide range of disciplines of academic and non-academic interest. The college also subscribes for international and national journals, periodicals and newspapers for the students and faculty members at the college library. In the College campus there is a Canteen which sells articles relating to teaching aids and varieties of foods, snacks and soft drinks.
Under the agencies of the Youth Welfare Dept., Government of West Bengal, a Youth Computer Centre is being run in Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas campus from November 2000. Willing students may obtain training at this Centre. The Centre is shifted to the 3N Building from July 2007.
Provision for imparting training to the NCC candidates is there in Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas . It was opened in December 1996. Lieutenant Prof. Prabir Kumar Dash, the permanent NCC officer, is in charge of the NCC Boys’ Wing. The NCC Girls’ Unit has recently been regularized by the NCC Department and is run under the supervision of NCC Officer Prof. Prabir Kumar Dash. The NCC Girls’ Wing is also controlled by 33 Bengal BN NCC under West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate. An NSS unit has been opened at Sundarban Mahavidyalaya - South 24 Parganas with the permission of the University of Calcutta. Process has been started to give it a visible shape and to make it a successful Unit of the College.
