Government Polytechnic - Jammu is a old Polytechnic established in the year 1960 by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir as the second Polytechnic in the state to provide technical and vocational education.
Government Polytechnic - Jammu is recognized by the all India council for technical education to offer 3 year diploma courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Computer Engineering and Architecture Engineering. To strengthen Technician Education in the state, World Bank Assistance was sought for capacity expansion, quality improvement and efficiency improvement of Technical Education in the state. As a result, two new courses, Travel & Tourism and Instrumentation & Control have been added in Government Polytechnic. Faculty development, modernization of Laboratories and workshop, promoting industry institute interaction, flexibility in course offering and providing functional autonomy are some of other initiatives being promoted as a result of world bank assistance.
Government Polytechnic - Jammu has good library facilities for students and faculty. With the world bank assistance, besides books, reference and other resources, learning resource center(L R C) is being established. This will facilitate independent learning on part of the students. The seating capacity is also being angumented to accommodate large number of students and make use of library facilities.
Government Polytechnic - Jammu has developed a computer center to provide computer training to the students. Presently the computer center has facility to train 15 students at a time but with the world bank assistance this facility is being enhanced to accommodate 60 students at a time. Each department has well equipped laboratories which are further being strengthened and modernized to provide practical training to students commensurate with the developments taking place in the world of work.
Government Polytechnic - Jammu has good workshop facilities to develop manual and maching skill in students. With world bank assistance, the workshops are being modernized to provide with CNC and other modern machines.The polytechnic has hostel facilities for about 150 boys. Seprate hostel facilities for girls are being provided under world bank assistance. Further, the kitchen, dinning hall recreation and toilet facilities are being improved by utilizing world bank assistance.
The auditorium of
Government Polytechnic - Jammu has been renovated which will boost cultural activities in the institute, which are so essential for development of overall personality of the students. The polytechnic is improving its guest house to provide suitable accommodation for experts, examiner and parents. After the world bank assistance is utilized,
Government Polytechnic - Jammu will have all infrastructure for effective functioning and be in a position to turnout first rate diploma engineers, capable of facing the challenges of modern developments in the world and the Polytechnic has evolved Vision & Mission Statement will also act as a centre for continuing education for upgrading the knowledge and skill of working Technical Manpower.
The Training and Placement Cell of
Government Polytechnic - Jammu was set up in the year 2002-2003. The Training and Cell arranges campus interviews for the candidates of various trades of Diploma Engineering.
