Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
Himachal Pradesh Medical College at Shimla (HPMC) was established in the year 1966 with admissions of 50 students in the first batch. With the establishment of Medical College in the State, the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state were met with the standards of health services going on and students benefiting with the advantage of staying home and getting better educational avenues. Medical College then had a modest beginning with makeshift arrangements for hostels etc., but ecstasy of joining the Medical College located in Shimla with its salubrious climate, took away the agony.
Himachal Pradesh Medical College was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla (now popularly known as IGMC in abbreviated form) in 1984. Admission facility was increased to 65 in the year 1978. 2,337number of under- graduates have passed out from this Medical College till 2005. The post Graduate courses were started in 16 disciplines in the year 1981. So far 462 post graduates and 231in diploma courses have passed out from IGMC till March 2006. More PG courses have been added from the session 2002-2005 in the specialties of Radiotherapy (Oncology) and Skin and VD. Total number of PG Degree seats are 39 and 18 are in diploma courses.
Efforts are on to introduce PG courses in the disciplines of Psychiatry and Pulmonary Medicine. 50% seats are available at IGMC through all India Quota from 2005 onwards.15% seats in M.B.B.S. course are available to all India Quota and 2 seats are available to NRI candidates. Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla has also been granted the status of Regional Cancer Centre by the Govt. of India, thus providing much needed comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patient. Essential periodical upgradation of facilities for investigations and treatment have been going on regularly and in the year 2005 facility of Open Heart Surgery has been made operationla and in 2006 MRI facility has been added.
Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla came into being in 1966 at Snowdon which was the residence of Lord Kitchnar (1873-74) the erstwhile Commander-in Chief of British-Indian Army. Over the years, the Medical College has grown to a stature of a modern & prestigious medical institution in the Country.
Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla is having 31 departments equipped with latest machinery and equipments. Several of its alumini are the faculty members in well known Medical Colleges in India and abroad. Multi-storied buildings at Snowdon, Kamla Nehru hospital together contribute 872 beds to IGMC.
Sophisticated equipments like MRI Scan, C.T. Scan, Cobalt Units, Gamma Camera, Selectron, Upper G.I. Endoscope, Colonoscope,Bronchoscopy, Nuclear Medicine facilities, ERCP, Ultrasonography, Haemodialysis, Pulmonary function test including diffusion studies and blood gas analyzer, Intensive Care Unit, Pacemaker, Holter Monitor, Colour Doppler Echo-cardiography, image intensifier for orthopaedics and Cardiology. Tread mill test, E.C.G., Laparoscopic surgery, transurethral resectoscope, laser and microwave diathermy for physiotherapy are in operation. Open Heart Surgery is also now operational.
There is a library maintained by the Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla for the students/staff. The library contains books on all the topics related to medical field. IGMC, Shimla consists of 2 sets of hostels viz. BHABA, RAMAN and Girls hostels maintained by the college. The BDS students of the Government Dental College, Shimla are also provided hostel accommodation in these hostels.
The hospitals attached to Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla have total bed strength of 872. Expansion plans are going on despite the constraint of land in hilly terrain of Shimla. New OPD block in IGMC has been made operational and now the patients has better sitting place in sanitized environment. The new OPD block which is named as E block was dedicated to the people of the Pradesh by Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Virbhadra Singh Ji on 19th November 2005. The Kamla Nehru Hospital has now been named as State Hospital for women and Children providing facilities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatology. New indoor block in main complex has been completed and a separate examination hall has also been provided. The hostel facility has been provided and rooms have been alloted to students at Blessington and more blocks are to be added in very near future.
Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla now provides the facilities of “Open Heart Surgery” for the benefit the poor patients requiring this facility, thus saving money and time.
The state of the art MRI facility has been started this year with the dedicatication of this facility to the people of the Pradesh by Hon'ble Chief Minister on 26th January 2006.The computerization of IGMC is on and soon most of the departments will be fully computerized. A six bedded ICU is also under construction. Indira Gandhi Medical College-IGMC Shimla is also imparting training to Nurses, Radiographers, O.T. Asst., Para Medical Ophthalmic Assistants and Laboratory Technicians. Indira Gandhi Medical college is one of the few colleges in India to have fiber optic endoscopy and C.T. Scan equipment.Closed heart surgery including pace maker (insertion is also available).
