Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua was set up under the aegis of Vivekananda Society of Education and Research. The college was started in 1995 in Kathua in a rented building. In fact, it was the first College of Education started to impart training at Bachelor of Education level outside Jammu city at that time. Today, it is popularly acknowledged as a centre of Excellence in the region. It provides professionals to the teaching field with skills honed to assume exalted leadership positions in the state and national spectrum. The college was started with a mission to provide intellectually well developed, socially concerned, morally upright and spiritually oriented teachers having proud of Indian Sanskriti & Civilization.

Objectives of Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua are making the teacher trainees aware of needs, aspiration, problem & difficulties of the community. Development of variety of skills (communication, social human relation and group process) essential to work individually and with people. Development of personality traits like adaptability, social sensitivity, tolerance, cooperation, leadership, participation involvement etc. in teacher trainees. Helping the pupil teacher to plan programmes and achieve the objectives of socially useful productive work etc. Development of feeling of love, care and respect for nature and its beauty and also pressure the same. College offers different kind of bachelor courses leading to different streams.
Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua is located in Lakhanpur, Kathua, Jammu. The college shifted to its own new spacious four storeyed building in 2000-01. The college is now situated at Lakhanpur, 1 km away from Gateway of Jammu & Kashmir State, on Pathankot-Jammu National Highway in a very ideal and idyllic atmosphere away from hub - bub of city life, it is at & distance of about 3 kanals. Library facility at Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua is gradually building up the library. Presently the total number of books including the reference books in the library is 7641. Some foreign publications have also been added to the library. The college library has books in all teaching subjects along with large number of general and reference books. Besides, the college subscribes 8 daily newspapers, 7 educational journals and 6 other magazines in English and Hindi for the benefit of students and staff members. The library of Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua has a separate reading room for the benefit of Bonafide College students and it remains open during vacations as well as after the college hours also.
Hostel facility of Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua has provision of hostels for both boys and girls. At present the institutes have two hostels namely 'Sharda Hostel for Girls' has been constructed at a 100 meter distance away from the main building of the college and within the college main campus having 38 spacious, airy and well ventilated rooms with mess, warden room and dining cum common room in which 15 rooms are meant for girls from outside the state. Hostels have separate messes to provide hygienic and fresh food. Resident wardens look after the Girls' Hostel. Proper security arrangements are ensured round the clock. Admission to hostel is compulsory for all girls coming from places at a distance of 40km and more. Our hostels are true an example of ‘HOME AWAY FROM HOME’ Lively atmosphere is provided in hostels with all the facilities of recreation. 67 girls and 5 boys resided in the hostels during 2008-09 sessions.
Medical facility of Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua has a dispensary for students and the staff for providing 'First Aid Facility' in times of emergency and for minor troubles. Water and Electricity facility at Vivekananda College of Education – Kathua is self managed by the institution (4 inches water bore) along with two 15KV and 7.5KV generators which are used in the absence of electric supply. Water coolers with aquagaurd facility have also been provided to supply clean, fresh and cold drinking water to the students.
